A plea to all hoarders of slightly dated gear.

For the Carrs mine trips that the Nenthead Mines Conservation Society run we have converted a number of Oldham light units to run on an LED which gives a comfortable light level without blinding the trip leader or needing an expensive battery pack. Inconveniently the conversion needs Oldhams with a screw-in main bulb rather than the more modern flanged bulb, which seem to be a fairly rare commodity.

To allow us to run two trips at once, we could really do with some more lights which is where the plea comes in; does anyone out there have some Oldham lights with reflectors for screw-in bulbs that they could part with for a good cause? So long as the switch still works, the condition isn't important and we don't need the batteries although leaving the cable on would be handy.

If you can help it would be greatly appreciated. :flowers:

Roy Fellows "might" have some of the bulb holders in his spares.
They should be a straight replacement for the other type.

Also Caving Supplies might have some (at a price)

Already tried Roy and he is flanged only.
Getting them commercially is an option but the less we have to spend on lights, the more we can spend on fixing Nenthead. 🙂

I've just had a scrat around the Oldham spares box. I have three reflectors of the MES bulb type.

a) Flashed plastic. Spot. As new condition. With bulb and rubber gasket.
b) Flashed plastic. Spot. Plating "mottled". With bulb.
c) Metal. Spot. Plating 20% worn showing "copper" base.

If these are of any use, you can have them. FOC.
I "may" have a couple of compete headpieces with MES reflectors in. Would have to poke around in a pile of junk that is on the angle of respose in the shed though!

Further to previous post...

I've extricated three MES bulb headpieces c/w cable and battery tops. All three have both main and pilot bulbs within and are in good clean condition. If you want these, you are welcome to them, but a postage contibution would be appreciated!

Adding to Nick's thanks - if you call at the smelting mill on one of our Open Days you may claim a free tea or coffee with cakes. Hazel's chocolate brownies are rather good.

Look forward to meeting you!

Would a few screw-in reflectors be any use, maybe a few wires and 'M clips'?

I'm sure I have some somewhere in decent condition which I can't use (they're an annoyingly different shape to the PF reflector and I could never get a non-unpleasant beam from a side-firing LED).

If non-urgent, I could probably pass them on to some mining type I know so they can work their way up to you.

Nick, I've a flanged-type headset which isn't earning its keep.

If you can scrounge screw-in bulb-holders they should interchange?

you're welcome to it if it;'ll help. PM address if you'd like it sent up.

The more the merrier, both screw-in reflectors and lamp units.
We do actually have a working set but some on the reflectors are decidedly low on the reflectiveness and some of the light units obviously had a hard paper round!

All gratefully received by whatever devious means they get up to the Nent.
I can strongly recommend coming up on an open day - Hazel significantly outperforms Mr Kipling on the baking exceedingly good cakes front! Unfortunately the last open day this year will be the 26th of this month.

OK, looks like 6 usable reflectors and 4 wires/clips will be there sometime, though maybe a somewhat indirect route.

I don't suppose you have any use for the odd old Oldham/CS Oldham charger (maybe twin or single)? I have one or more somewhere which are otherwise destined for the local recycling centre or as doorstops in a caving hut, and if I'm going to be using caverpost/minerpost for the reflectors...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
