Can anyone reccomend a good emergency light ? Ideally it would meet the following criteria :

1/ Totally waterproof IP67
2/ LED light source
3/ Standard rather than exotic batteries
4/ Small enough to put in pocket
5/ Reasonably robust

I am not looking for anything shoddy or cheap, but preferably a good quality solid product. I will be using it only as a "get out of jail" light source should all else fail.

Any suggestions ? 🙂

Petzl E+Lite seems the obvious answer, but it runs on two CR2032 cells, so I guess that's out. Very lightweight and the flashing mode is quite a handy feature. Well worth carrying imho.

I've taken to carrying a Silva L2 (the 1W version) as a back-up, but it's not waterproof. It's also hand as a pocket-sized headlamp for exploring places you want to saunder up to, without attracting attention. I'll concur that mostly any 1W LED (Luxeon) lamp would do the same job though.

Thanks Vanoord..
As this is going to be a light that is used only in an emergency situation, something small & unobtrusive is going to be desirable, therefore I am thinking along the lines of hand held rather than head / hat mounted.

Also as I am frequently in deep water .. ( Er... literally, I should add) it really would need to be totally waterproof.

The Fenix P3D might be a good solution, see here:

Or Vanoord sells a very nice 3W Gerber torch, got my dad one for father's day and it's a nice piece of kit - small but solid feeling.

That looks certainly like what I am looking for. Is it waterproof ?

The Fenix is a great bit of kit, lots of light output and all in a teeny-weeny unit. But! those batteries are not cheap: fine as a back-up I reckon, but I wouldn't want to feed it regularly*!

* unless, of course, you can get rechargeable ones?

Actually, as I only ever anticipate using it in an emergency situation, the battery cost would not be an issue. It looks like a nice piece of kit .....

... But is it waterproof ?

Hi All,

I don't think the P3DE is intended to be absolutely waterproof (not to IP68: IP67 is 1 metre depth for 30 minutes). Fenix describe it as waterproof, Flashlight Review (http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/fenix_p3dce.htm) says "dunkable", as the guy who writes it is pretty cautious. I haven't tried submerging mine yet.

A couple of points, though: first, you can get rechargeables for this, and they're fine. Second, there are O-rings to waterproof the main body threads (it comes in three pieces - the head, the body & the tail). The only other possible points of ingress for water are past the lens (should be possible to seal it with silicone sealant) and possibly the tailswitch, ditto. I shall try this on my P3DE and report back.

Cheers,

JM

You also have a choice of similar Fenix lights that take either a single CR123 battery, or a single AA, or a double AA. I chose the P3DE because: the two CR123s give it a longer life in an emergency, the Li-ion rechargeables stay charged on the shelf, are much smaller & lighter than AAs, and it has a better range of brightness settings. It's worth buying a pair of the rechargeables with a dedicated charger - there are lots of cheapo deals if you do this.

Cheers,
JM

Not as high tech or waterproof (although you may be able to get a waterproof one) but a windup torch is always good in case all light and batteries fail, and handy for general use as its never going to run out

Hi Nimrod,

I know you've already ordered one, but I'm sure you'll be happy to know that I tried submerging mine (in water, drank all the whisky...) as promised. After three hours, all the internals were bone dry and it was still going like a train.

Cheers,

JohnnyM

My new light has arrived. looks a very nice, quality piece of kit. It came with batteries too (unexpected) and some other freeby toys (a nice surprise) 🙂
