Hi Roy,

How's that side project coming on? - I'm liking what you have been working on it looks very impressive!

Full stop I'm afraid mate.

It is an analogue circuit switched by small magnetic switches. The beam was by small optics, not the best by my standards. I would not be able to get anything in that I currently use and would need to assemble a custom PCB switching through MOSFETS.

It may at some time present an opportunity to test a new idea so would like to keep it on one side. Happy to refund your postage if you wish.

EDIT
For those wondering, its a kaput Stenlight.
Of further interest possibly, I will venture the opinion that a high output Stenlight would be impossible without a complete design change.

You are right and I am wrong, I am obviously having a early onset senior moment. It is indeed a polycarbonate one according to the Scurion website as well.

For what it's worth, mine has remained scratch free since I upgraded the light and it has suffered a fair bit of wiping off of dig spatter so will have a been pretty well tested.
The previous one had a couple of minor ones (from catching steelwork on a dig so a bezel wouldn't have helped) that probably would have happened to glass as well.
The Scurion 'glass' certainly doesn't scratch easily but that is almost certainly the coating, there are some pretty amazing coatings that are very durable.

Its OK Nick no worries.

I had to fit a new glass, well didn't have to, to one of my roasters when a heavy roof contact took a small piece out of it. Didn't shatter or crack though.

I did manage to shatter one with a hammer deliberately though. Needed to see how strong was the stuff I was selling to people.

Polycarbonate is light and immensely strong, its the material of the old Oldham lead acid batteries. But I still prefer glass.

I have finally received my sample batch of front glasses after 6 weeks! Confirmed that they same as stock sample and just ordered quantity. When quantity order shipped and in transit I will submit face plate drawings to manufacturer.
All this is payed for with PayPal, if it was Capital One you would never see a Scorpion!

I have settled on three models.
A basic same as Lynx basic but uprated specs, ie IP68 - 5 metres.
An X8, same as current Lynx X2000 but with separate switching for the floods. IP68
The X12 already briefly described.

The aim is incredibly reliable and robust lamps to suit all tastes at affordable prices. However, some components more expensive that the Lynx so the Scorp will be a bit more.
I have some trial components in the pipeline for a 50 metre dive lamp, possibly later next year. There are components out there good for 10 bar (145 psi), but dear!

You will need to get your order in for the new Scorpion when announced,
You liked the Scurions crisp beam, I took this on board and now use better centre spot reflectors that give same light quality but all 2000 + lumens of it.

I am increasing water resistance to IP 68 - 5 metres with a 50 metre dive model in the pipeline. GoPro compatibility and a lot of new features.

Currently awaiting face plates.

The sign of the red scorpion will be alpha and omega of lamps. I listen to what people say and take it on board.

I have taken power as far as I want, now its intrinsic reliability and ability to withstand hard use.

Hello people

With Christmas 2017 a mere few days away its a good time to wish all my friends and customers a happy Christmas and a good New Year.

Off the usual subjects, here is a glimpse behind the scenes of Fellows Caplamps, this is the main screen of my possibly by now famous 'system' that I sometimes refer to.

🔗113681[linkphoto]113681[/linkphoto][/link]

Developed by me originally as an off the shelf sales and accounting package it has been developed into a bespoke application to run LEDCaplamps. Looking at it, it is rather self explanatory, customer name on the "To Do" list blacked out for obvious reasons.

Mm, I dont know about that. I am moving into sensible lamps for really sensible people, I have heard that there are quite a few about, but not round our way.

It appears that sensible people are increasing on UKC, so maybe a New Year coup? Who knows.

Anyway, have a good Christmas and New Year, just try to convince your wife or partner who I am sure is very sensible not to encourage the youngsters to take their dad as a role model.

Take care
Roy

Hi again
I have just had a letter from the Patents Directorate. It seems that my patent is approved for the heat conduction and dissipation system as used on the Trigon. Finalisation Feb 2018

There must be thousands of Oldham headsets in stock somewhere, this system would convert them to a good recreational lamp.

Well here is the finished Scorpion prototype, ready for extensive testing.

🔗113688[linkphoto]113688[/linkphoto][/link]

Fully GoPro Compatible
Max output 3500 lumens
IP 68: 5 metres waterproof
User friendly 2 mode groups of 3 modes from single toggle switch, high range and low range.
Switch up, on and off: 300,1000, and 3500 lumens
Switch down, on and off: 40, 75, and 160 lumens
Memorises last settings so ability to switch instantly up or down to pre-selected modes.
2 sets of 3 LEDs, 2 beam and one flood, power divided equally.

In all modesty, a lot of thought has gone into this. Down to the choice of the circular front lens direct bonded to the body. Its 60mm outside diameter bezel will take standard accessories like a diffuser for photography. It will be available with a wide range of GoPro accessories and will mount on anything beside a helmet, eg a tripod.

Weight is 230 grams, other versions will be lighter.
Price in the range of £200 - £250
Other versions cheaper.

Power bank solution is still being developed. I am testing with the Lynx X12 2070 version which unfortunately is nearly 400 grams. I have a lighter 18650 pack which weighs 266 grams but its only 2600 mAh as it has high discharge cells. I will test the lamp with high capacity 3500 when they arrive, as I am currently out of them.

New: The Dragon EX

Same as D1800 but with following changes to Spec:

Analogue design with two simple modes from each switch throw,

Water resistance raised to IP 68 – 5 metres submersion.

I have no intention whatsoever of discontinuing the Dragon as it’s the best worklamp I have ever used weighing in at a mere 125 grams. That, and its small form factor make it the ideal lamp for digging projects and general usage where size and weight are an important factor.

Looking at returns I have become aware that I have had more Dragons back than any other. Looking at the lamps themselves there is every indication that this relates to the type of use rather than any inherent defects in the design. Indeed, I have just had one return due to a switch failing on the upper position. Indications are of the ingress of water at the switch, which although of German manufacture and IP 67 rated (1 metre submersion, 30 minutes) had suffered from water ingress causing it to fail in the upper throw.

Another literally looked as though it had been dragged along the ground off the back of a Landrover on cross country exercise.

I have come to the conclusion that IP67 is just not good enough for hard usage. A customer had slight water ingress on an X2000 a while back in a water fall under flood conditions where it was not possible to stand, he had to crawl on his belly. This exceeded IP 67 standard.

As a result of all this I am looking at upgrading water resistance to IP 68 - 5 metres submersion on the whole range of Scorpions as they are developed, with a 50 metre dive model as an option. Main issue with the whole range is the fact that at greater depths water would be forced up inside the cable from the plug, so dive models will be integral with the power bank which will open up for charging.

For some time I have been shipping lamps with upgraded IP68 glands, the last Dragons to go out had rubber boots over the switch and threads sealed to raise the water ingress resistance. The boots may well split under hard use but they are easily replaceable by the customer, the switch would then default to IP 67, and I may be including a spare in the future.

The Dragon EX is named thus where “EX” stands for “Extreme Usage”. This model is down to two modes from each switch position, down is standard, and up is high, perfectly logical. Downlighters have doubled in power and common to both settings.
The lamp now is completely analogue, no PIC. Standard is powered form a simple liner driver, high from a straight switch mode driver. Downlighters operate from a liner driver plus a Schottky diode to prevent the standard mode feeding the high through the downlighters. The switcher is directly heat sunk to the copper thermal conductor which directs the heat to the outer casing.
The result is simpler internal layout with less to go wrong, and more importantly, more room around components, but at the expense of some functionality. I have to see how this is accepted.
Unfortunately there wont be a dive model Dragon as the front glasses are direct bonded on the inside, with extra support from the abutment of the reflectors. For diving they need to be on the outside so pressure forces the bond rather than against it.
Nor a Lynx due to headset design.

Hi Roy. Sorry if you've already answered this question but the new Scorpion looks brilliant, do you have any idea when it will be available to buy? My girlfriend is after a new lamp so I think I'll treat her to one when you start shipping.

I want to be able to launch all models simultaneously, The X12, X8 (same config as current X2000), EX_Basic, and the Dive.

I have a waterproof battery case for the dive, this model will be same as EX_Basic but a double beam same as X12 rather than a beam and flood. The EX_Basic will have IP 68 - 5 metre button switch, delivery on the 15th from RS Components, while the Dive will an (expensive) IP69 10BAR.

Both these will use same electronics as current Lynx X_Basic so can be supported by a 2 cell power pack. But use XP_L emitters for a total of about 1500 lumens.

Looking good so far, just confirmed that 3S of the best 3.5AH cells will support the Scorp X12 at full power throughout most of the discharge range, so weights continue to fall.

Only just on my feet again today, been virtually flat out on my bed all week with the mother of all chest bugs. People take warning, there is some real nasty stuff about. I caught mine at Sainsbury's of all places.

First shipping probably March

I have been testing the prototype EX_Basic (Extreme use)

I have had to assemble it using an IP 67 switch as the IP 68 switches ordered before Christmas are still unavailable, and this is a major UK supplier.

Anyway, the thinking behind it it reliability under extreme conditions, low retail cost, and quality of light output. To the latter end I have designed the reflector module shown close up below.

🔗114177[linkphoto]114177[/linkphoto][/link]

The bare emitter is mounted on a size matched solid aluminium column let into the large diameter reflector. The result is a substantial heat soak and conductivity for bare emitter and a very sharp and crisp lighting effect.
The electronics are same as the Lynx X_Basic but using XP-L emitters which give a bit more output. It has the same quick touch 3 modes plus 10 finer ones available from a long press as well as the green, amber, red, flashing red, battery indicator. Standby current draw is negligible.

Weight is 180 grams, max output about 1500 lumens. Should hold its own against a Scurrion on light output quality and power. Price will be £100 to £150.

As can be seen, there is less external heatsinking as its not required on this lamp. Power bank will standard 2 cell, but considering offering a stronger Deluxe version using the same case as the dive model but detachable. Have to see.

Other Scorp news

I am now assembling a prototype X8, same innards as Lynx X2000 but will cost a lot more money!

I am struggling a bit with the dive model. Cant use same electronics as the EX as its a fixed battery. I have a driver solution that can give more power and that would be used in conjunction with the blue nightrider battery indicator off a gravity switch. User would open battery case and disconnect to put the lamp away. You have to do this to recharge anyway.

Issue I have is that although my electronics are running 97% efficient through all the modes the current regulation is very poor. I am also indecisive about the glass, dont know whether to use standard or 4mm laminated.

The X12 is virtually done and dusted. Runs at full power off 3S 18650 high capacity so we are keeping the weight of the power pack down. The 2070 cells only give marginally more burn time. I am trying to keep prices down but its looking like £245, X8 will be the same.

Another issue is the light diffuser I want to offer. The 60mm Nightcore is expensive but would fit. I am looking at manufacturing my own with a choice of colour filters for fancy photography or playing silly devils.
I do have a range of inexpensive GoPro accessories to offer. Tripod mounts, Lamp and Hero camera adaptor bar etc.
I am offering a lighting system not just a lamp
