wow, just watched that, not only good footage, I hope my eldest becomes as good as that lad - he's a game one!

That's my sisters boy, he's had a few trips lately with us and is getting quite into it.

My eldest is not keen on venturing underground, the youngest comes along regularly though and we also had a go at video a while back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLZeeYY4Tfw  this was done with a B&Q million candlepower type torch. I wonder how some of these new lamps would suit making video? Would be handy not to have to lugh seperate lights about, although I'm not sure is £350 worth of handy

I have a Super MagnumStar 3 X D BIN SSc P7s on the drawing board. Should put out about 2000 to 2700 lumens.

Although I am posting everthing on ME and my own ledcaplamps.com, progress is slow due to holidays and other work.

You're 100% welcome to post in a Member Project thread on here if you like Roy, I for one would be interested to see your project taking shape, and I'm sure others would be too.

Same goes for anybody else engaged in lamp self build projects, more than welcome to use the Member Projects area of the forum as a journal for the project.

Do you get a set of shades as standard with the package Roy? 😉

Joking aside, you have to watch your eyes messing with these things.
I use a set of welding goggles to watch the LEDs to check for even output.

Yes, I take it you are familiar with 4 die retina after image from P7's?

on iscaoutdoors.co.uk there is a video of the new lamp. Can't get it too work on my phone but its in the blog section. Why anyone would spend £380 on one when a basic sten can be had for £189 i dont know, how many seconds will it shine at 800 lumens before the limiter cuts in.?

Roy, any chance you could put the details in this thread?

It's a pain in the proverbial to be referred elsewhere and it's conceivable that users may not wish to have to try and follow discussions in different places.

Presumably if we wish to keep track of your project, we can look at your website at ledcaplamps.com http://www.ledcaplamps.com/  - any chance you could put the updates at the top of the page as they do get a bit lost at the bottom?

Meanwhile, back to the Viper:

As far as I can see, there is no guidance as to how long the Viper will run at 800+ lumens?

Presumably this would be until the thermal overheat cuts in (assuming there is one! 😮 ) and that will depend on ambient temperatures etc..

The only lamp manufacturer that I'm aware of that has actually stated that their headlamp will automatically limit the run time on its highest setting is Fenix: the forthcoming (sometime this autumn) HP10 headlamp has outputs 7 / 50 / 120 / 225 lumens with the 225 lumen output limited to 3 minutes.

Heres a link to a video of the Viper, it looks at the manual as well and if you look carefully it shows runs times:

Not sure if Neils question there was about Roy's lamps or the Viper?

I'm hesitant to pass any comment on the Viper in case I get accused of saying anything anti-it. It looks a very nicely designed piece of equipment, but the specifications are a little loose, even on vipercave.com, it wouldn't harm to have proper burn and run times, 825lm is a theoretical maximum based on 3 x 275lm and doesn't factor in thermal limiting and loss due to heat, optics etc. However it's still going to be very bright. Like I said, not criticising the lamp in any way, those are just observations.

Aha! Cheers Mike!

825 lumens - 1¼ hours
365 lumens - 5½ hours
215 lumens - 12½ hours
80 lumens - 48 hours

Mind you, Fenix say that the HP10 will run for 2½ hours at 225 lumens, but keep quiet about the fact that it's only in 3 minute bursts ;)

With the Viper specs, I'm a bit stumped by the idea that 80 lumens is a 'Camp' setting: were I the sort to be camping, I suspect anyone waving 80 lumens around all evening would find their lamp flying into the nearest bit of undergrowth 😉

Their camp setting is what they think as a pilot setting, 80lm as you say is bloody hi for pottering around in. I tend to run my Retro2 at 100lm and that is perfect for general underground. Maybe the designer had a cataract ? 😉

But saying all this, (apart from the price) I do think it looks like a nice bit of kit.

Oh dear, sorry Simon, that’s the old model!

Old MagnumStar was 1000 lumens, new MagnumStar 1250 lumens.

There is a Super MagnumStar using 3 X D BIN SSC P7s, I expect it to work and should have a test bed model within the next week or so. Output is conjectural as max output of P7s is conjectural. My estimate is 2000 to 2900 lumens.
Where this is coming from is the fact that the MagnumStar is more of a thrower, as can be seen from the pictures on ledcaplamps, the incitement for developing the Super is for photographic purposes whereby snaps can be taken by the light of ones lamp. For best effects, take of helmet and hold at arms length to deepen the shadow. You see, Cree Q5s are a real good ‘beam’ LED and ideal for a caplamp, but P7s give a beautiful even lighting and make magnificent floods.

I am doing a production run of UniStars at £100 each based on new or nearly new Oldham GT headsets purchased as Navy surplus. It’s a short run of about 4 or 5, one sold already.

Mr Vanoord
I am sorry to refer to other sites but if I duplicate my postings on AN and ME some people may feel I am being overbearing, I don’t know, but that was my fear.
Assure me that I am not and I promise to duplicate the latest on my lamps on both. Having said this, a lot of what I post on ME is technical info for the other lamp builders. As far as I know, there is only Mr Morlock on this site, and he follows it all on ME.
I have tended to only post about lamps that I consider done and dusted on here, and there is still a way to go on the big ones.

Having said all of this, I thank you for your interest.

In which case I look forward to seeing beam shots from the new one 😮 having seen the old one in action (Mid Wales weekend) I know it'll be a stunner.

Can absolutely assure you you're not being overbearing Roy!

My personal worry was that people might have been put off posting on here about lamp upgrades, new lamps, DIY projects because I sell StenLights and they thought I might not like material about other lamps on here.

This is absolutely not the case, discussion is absolutely welcome. The Sten (as I've said to anybody who asks) has to compete on the open market, and I'm keen that this site (and me personally) comes across as completely impartial in that respect. I don't keep the commercial interest in Stens a secret, but at the same time I don't (I hope) shout about it, because the forum and site aren't intended for my personal gain!

This DIY lamp builds, new lamp rumours, techy chat is welcome, in as much or as little as people wish.
