I'll spin this out from a different thread: what does everyone use as a backup to their main lamp?

My setup until recently has looked a bit like this:

The main headlamp is a Silva LX, although at the moment I've reverted to the less-powerful L1. To the left (in the pic) is a Fenix L1 mounted on a Lockblock and to the right is (was!) a Silva M4 in the role of pilot light and roof illumination.

Following a head-bumping episode in Cwmorthin last weekend, I've lost the Silva M4 and need to replace it.

The M4 isn't available any more and the replacement is an L4. However, this has a slightly odd mounting bracket and what I'm looking for is something which has a hinge onto a flat plate that I can drill a single hole through in order that it can rotate as needed.

Any ideas?

An alternative would be a Petzl Tikka with the Adapt system - has anyone tried this?

Using a Petzl e-lite - very happy with it.

I just have a Stenlight as my main light. But I hope to buy one of those L1D torches. Vanoord, whats the website name of your shop?

I've got one just in case of emergencies, but I'd prefer to have something on my lid that's got mega-life and uses more normal batteries.

Something that uses 2 or 3 AAA batteries fits the bill, I reckon.

Cheers Vanoord, for some reason I thought your shop was Excellent Stuff. Or is that Simon's shop? Very confusing

SimonRL is part of Excellent Stuff http://www.excellentstuff.co.uk/  whilst I run a boatyard - we stock a few things of interest, like the Fenixes, although the majority of stuff we sell is engine parts and so on.

Oddly, despite having a cabinet full of Silva headlights, I'm probably looking at Petzl as a 'pilot' on my lid!

Indeed correct.

Or from stopping me from banging my head on the ceiling :)

I have no desire to use the damn thing to find my way around, merely to cast a dull glow vaguely upwards. I believe Petzl lamps are good at providing a dull glow...

I have a zebralight H30.
Its great.
well made, weighs very little, runs for ages (days on low) and is properly waterproof.
runs on a single CR123 battery.
everything the e-lite should be!
the bottom can be unscrewed to ensure it doesn't accidently come on.

Hasnt anyone made a bigger fenix that'll retro onto an oldham lead?? I use Mr Mikes retro, and it works well - could do with a more powerful beam though - my backups are a couple of petzl duos, which are very reliable, and at least I know I'll get out of trouble with them.

The thread is about backup lighting right?
I carry a LED Mini Maglite round my neck on a Para cord together with a whistle (if I need to indicate my whereabouts to rescue or whatever) and a Silva map compass. I also now have a Maplins LED diver’s torch, very bright about as good as my Retro 2 on middle setting and only costs about £7. I haven’t seen the Tesco Q5 but the Maplins is small enough to hang round your neck and guaranteed waterproof and takes AA batteries same as my photographic kit. I also have one of the LED 'wind up to charge' jobs.
I am aware that with LED caplamp I have no backup pilot light so now carry extra spare. I used to carry a spare bulb in my helmet inside an old photo film container stuck to one of the straps with electricians tape, and practiced changing a bulb in the dark working inside my upturned helmet so as not to loose anything dropped, but with LED the old practices became obsolete.

My avatar is a poor likeness.

Just got back from a trip where I had to ditch the Stenlight and use a Petzl Myo XP. I definitely agree with Jagman now. I will never use it again underground.

Not only did battery case fill with water and the switch get clogged with mud but it is nowhere near focused enough. Maybe I am spoilt after using the Sten but I ended up having to use a Fenix T1 handtorch most of the time, luckily it was a straight walk through withouth any crawls.

Definitely need to get a decent backup with some proper throw.

Good lord, what were you doing to drown the thing?

Just as I was about to order a Petzl Tactikka with the helmet mount thingy as a backup as well...
