Good lord, what were you doing to drown the thing?

Just as I was about to order a Petzl Tactikka with the helmet mount thingy as a backup as well...

Nothing really! It was just the water puring in through the roof, it eventually got in to the battery case. I dont like the style of the caseits just a flexible plastic clip-on thing.

I think I would prefer a Fenix L2 or L1 as a backup, as I found the switch on the Myo XP is a bit fiddly and small and I couldnt find it with gloves on and it got full of grit and mud.

have two myo xp's and drowned them regularly in water and mud with no ill effects - I bring them home - take batteries out - and scrub in warm water, inside and out - they love it. Put 'em on the windowsill to dry out and fire em up with new batteries next trip - never missed a beat - just a bit faint for main source of light..

I am drying mine at present I am sure it will be fine! I just think they are too faint to navigate rough tunnels. I use mine for other underground purposes but I wouldn't like to rely on it in a place which I wasn't familiar with.

Am thinking of getting th Fenix L1D, does anyone know how they compare to the Myo XP? Or should I get something better?

The Fenix L1 is slightly brighter than my Silva L1 which uses the same 3W Luxeon as the pre-2008 Myo XP - I think!

The new-ish 2008-spec Myo XP uses an emitter similar to the Silva LX, which is a little bit brighter than the L1D.

The thing I like about the L1 is that it runs off a single AA: I've also got a P3D, which uses 2x CR123As and although that's noticeably brighter, the L1 makes a good back-up mounted on a helmet.

I also tend to take my L1 with me when I'm travelling, mostly because the batteries can be easily/cheaply obtained. It's particularly fun watching security staff in airports work out what it is, then look at it whilst they turn it on to check it's a torch and not a bomb: they get their sight back eventually... 😮

I want to come in again on this.
I believe quite strongly that at least one back up light should come under category of 'immediate action kit'. So it needs to be right at hand. What if your caplamp goes halfway down a pitch, or in some other inconvenient place. I am aware of helmet mounted auxilary lights, but the fact that the caplamp was on the helmet my be part of the equation that caused its loss of functionality.
Hence my choice of hanging it round my neck on paracord.
A lot of people on the site my be aware that I often go underground on my own, hence my thinking. Regardless of this my point is clear, back up is no good at the bottom of a kit bag or similar.

I use a Raptor main, with a surefire as a back up with spare batteries for it too. 250 ish lumens and nice and small.

Assuming I have been really stupid and broken / lost both of them, I also have 2 chemical snaplights in my pocket always as an emergency light source. They are waterproof, do not need batteries, weigh next to nothing and each will provide approx 8 to 10 hours of useable light.

If I am taking pictures I also have a 500 lumen Ultrafire, but Idon't count this as a backup as it is only good for a couple of hoursanyway, and if I have it I will have been using it so battery power will below already if I have a lighting emergency.

If this set up is working properly and I am stuck for any reason, I would get continuous light for about 50 hours before everything died.

That is assuming I haven't been using one of my three 12 hour candles. Again these are nice and light and last a long time.

To my mind, your light (s) are your life underground, and you should always have enough to keep you going for at least a week worth of stuckness. Hoping of course that it never happens 😎 If your in the dark you can't move without a very high likelyhood of killing yourself, so I like to keep the odds stacked in my favour.

Ah yes, snaplights - I reckon in reality you'd get about 24 hours usable light. I've been testing one over the last few days and it was still usable for lighting a small room after 48 hours and still *just* visible after 4 days!

Certainly, Roy's suggestion about having a light round your neck is a good one, as a helmet-mounted spare is no good if your helmet takes a tumble.

I tend to carry something (oft a Fenix P3D) on my belt which should do the trick in case I lose my helmet and it also doubles for lighting photographs.

The experience with my main headlamp failing was a salient lesson in having a backup on the helmet which you can use to get out of a mine with no impairment of functionality.

I'm seriously considering putting a Tacktikka XP on my helmet next...

Snap lights sound a good last line of backup, any good sources you can recommend?

I've bought them in batches from ebay before now. You can get them for about 25 to 30p each if you buy them in bulk.

Don't know whether they're as good as ones bought in outdoor shops etc, but they do glow at least

You will pay £7 for 3 in Cotswold Outdoors, so I would question the quality if they are that cheap 😞 Mind you, if you have that many it doesn't really matter if they don't last long does it?! 😎

I have heard a strong rumour that if you put a still working snap light into the freezer, it preserves its power for another day. Is this correct?

I shall freeze one as well for you then

I'm not going to say the other rumour. I believe the content is toxic 😉

Whats a snaplight? Is that those things I call glowsticks, what you bend to crack the inside and they glow?

Do they give off enough light to navigate by?
