Whilst travelling around locally I have seen these 2 sites, and wondered whether anyone can tell me anything about them:

1/ On the A44 on the approach to Ponterwyd there is this blocked entrance to an adit.

It seems a strange place for a mine since it is straight onto the road, which has been there for a long time.
Could it have been for mine drainage?
Has it ever been explored?

2/ A bit further away, at Forge, Machynlleth, there is a "cutting" into the hillside, now choked with brambles, (unlike the photo)

Someone has suggested that there might be a mine adit at the back, and it does seem to tie up with old maps of the area, which do state there was a mine near here, although there appears to be nothing on the ground now.

1/ It is but a few feet to a forehead. A bit pretty though. Could have been an ice house, or the start of a trial. You could climb over the 'fence', gap is big enough and no one bother you.

2/ The one at Forge is but a short trial, or maybe again, and ice house. There are a lot of these around and often mistaken for mine workings. The caravan and car port are recent.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

1/ I must stop and take a good look at it.

2/ This old OS map shows a level at this point

and there is the old copper level of Ogof Wyddon further up the hill.
The caravan has gone now and replaced by the blackberry bushes!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
