Went up to nant duu (cyfarfa) lead mine today, very close to glasyn lake' been there many times and always wondered if anyone has been down the shaft with the adit in the top? I'm presuming the men would have been lowered in to the shaft via a horse driven cage and the adit connecting would of been the way to the cage/lift? There's not a lot of information on the mine workings and the shaft is quite a site! Considering you have to climb down to the edge of the shaft to access the adit- any information will be great:thumbup:

I may be incompetent but I cannot find it on the database, plenty on the web though.

Edit: It appears I'm incompetent.;D

That's because its Nant Ddu or Cyfartha, it is on the database, because I added a few photographs to it a few years ago. CPAT has some information and I think there may be something in the SCMC archive about exploration. The shaft is known by some as the whim shaft, (the outline of the whim is visible) and was pumped out by the water wheel situated on the stream, you can still make out the course of the flat-rods and the bob pit is still in place.
I would have thought that the mine might have been more easily accessed from the deep adit which is some way from the shafts.

Spelled it wrong sorry its cyfartha, there's info on cpat but not aa lot, I'm just wandering if there is possible a level at the bottom as as waterfall goes into it but its not flooded by the sound of it..

Is the deep connected at the top? The level goes straight to the shaft.. I presumed the deep would be lower down? Ere is a level lower down with a collapse but a fair way from shaft-- I'll look up the report, thanks 😉

It is in the database.

There's a level on the maps, 2000 feet away from the shaft which points in the right direction.

Yes= I manually looked for the mine via the mines list but found nothing but if you use the search box u find it straight away. There's a picture of the deep whichmyself or Scott tanner uploaded last year, labeled recently uncovered level I'm still wondering if there's a level at the bottom of the shaft tho' its not filled with water and can't find any signs of a drainage admit lower down...

"Recently opened level" is the deep adit and can be entered by the shaft just above it. However there is a fall some distance in.

I believe that you can into the upper adit by climbing down into the shaft but not the deep as water has backed up.

Basically, underground its a no goer.

Thanks for your input Roy, you are correct, we went through the upper adit last year, it splits off to directions, left if I remember bearing the collapse and right goes out the 'recent uncovered level' adit.. is the collapse where the deep/ way to the lower water filled adit you suggested? We've been to most if not all the local mines, just doing a re- cap :smartass:

about 5 or 6 of us spent 6 weekends at nant ddu in 2006 draining the deep adit to the north east, after a stupid amount of digging and pumping through the nite we lowered the water enough to access the deeep adit through its air shaft, the water was still up to our chins , David and i made it as far as a huge collapse under another supposed blocked adit but not to the shaft, i wrote a report on our findings , ill see if i can dig a copy out or at least photocopy it for you, there are another 3 adits to dig there that i never got back to, one from memory is supposed to be very long, the joy of this mine is you can get the truck right to it, i wouldnt advise going down the main shaft , a hell of a lot of stuff has slid down there and the ground at the collar is very unstable:)

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
