After alot of walking I mapped the whole route and plotted the features onto a Google Map

Given that the route was closed in 1908, I found a huge amount more to see than the books say is there :smartass: ... including Sleeper blocks with pins, I will be entering alot more photographs in the data base in due course. :thumbsup:

Ta Much, just uploaded a few of the pics I took and relics found on the Data base...

i liked the mapping tool on google, very easy and a quick accessible result.

Going to start another Tramway imminently associated with Cromford canal and Pentrich/Oakerthorpe collieries... Had a fantastic find last night, an original embankment and culvert bridge thus proving the route... thus it can be written up.

Some excellent research and leg work there.

Doesn't part of the Oakerthorpe Tramway go through the nature reserve at Oakerthorpe. They are the remains of the bridge which crossed the brook.

I keep trying to find the old sough which emerges around there. I believe a few years ago the lock gates were visible. It's all overgrown now.
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

Very interesting set of photos. No doubt it's crossed your mind but you could write a very good monograph on the subject. :flowers:

Well there are history books/articles aplenty on the route but nobody seems to have bothered walking the route to verify what was written... like the Ford Colliery section... the pictures are afew of about 250 taken.... met some great locals on way who all helped.

You are quite right Carnkie a paper is overdue on the route as it stands... I can see alot of what I have recorded being gone in a few years.

Very interesting that, don't usually bother too much with surface remains, normally prefering underground works. I like the detail in the fishbelly angled rails, and the stone sleepers. Sizable network of rails too. Have seen some remains recently like that at Bugsworth canal basin, near Whaley Bridge , but very little remains now.

Peak forest I did last year and will be doing some detailed trips.
Google satellite has helped as the alignments can actually be plotted off the old maps.... thus the walk was possible, sadly those who went before me did not have the benefit thus missed alot... Glad you liked, Pentrich tramway next... a real problem one! :surrender:

You've been having a lot of fun by the looks of this, it's always nice to find that there's more remaining than was thought!

I'm finding google and flash earth satellite photos pretty useful too on my current project of trying to exactly pin done the location of Chapeldale mine, although it's thrown up a rather awkward problem in that the site that appears to fit from the sat photos and my ground investigations doesn't fit with some of the old maps and the barmaster's entries.....

Ditto.... Various routes and alignments presumed on the Tramways did not fit here either!!!

Very odd... Guess maps and plans were redrawn so often they often messed stuff up like boundries.

Just had a strange chat re the maps thing.... phone just rang and a chap (into Colliery History) I know rang for a chat and we got onto maps etc... he just discovered where his house borders an old colliery site, the open cast nicked about 8 feet of his garden a few years before he lived there.... He noticed the google sat plan was completely different to the map with his deeds!!!! Queried it and the company is settling with him... apparently many people have caught onto this for dispute resolution! Interesting .....

I had a problem sometime ago trying to locate a particular house that was vital to THE border dispute down here. The house was always in a slightly different position. Found all the maps used during the many court hearings at the CRO but as a barrister pointed out only one of the many maps used true north. The rest used magnetic north. Looked at the 1840 Tythe map and the house was in a completely different position to all the court maps! As a matter of interest, the house is no longer there but was just N/E of Pascoe's shaft South Wheal Francis.

In the case of the maps I'm looking at, they're a collection of straight lines showing the approximate direction of veins, and I 've been trying to get a scaled tracing to match up with the visible vein lines on a composite map produced from Google earth. The problem I have is that one of the two shows a mine we can fix accurately (Hubbadale), but there's a set of features about 250m to the SW which fit with the Chapeldale veins really well... only problem is that then throws Hubbadale way out, assuming the old plan is exactly to scale and none of the sections marked as unworked have been squashed to fit everything on the paper! Oh, the joys of old maps.....

Old maps are hard work I know....

Just another bonus of google... I wanted to find the engine houses and mines at Linares in Spain, Zoomed in on Satellite and was able to trace out the surface workings on the Lodes, followed them along and found most of the stuff I wanted, I marked the sites with a pointer then turned it onto map and Bobs your uncle we have a pretty good map of Linares... granted no mine names to look at but i'd dare hire a car and tour!! Google has saved me hours of research!
