theres 1 or 2 adits around for california in various states of dis-repair do you have access to the NMRS book for weardale?

theres some good co-ordinates in there.

Great Eggleshope valley may be of more interest though ;)

Damned if you do, and damned if you don''''''''t.

I get a bit confused around there so will happily stand corrected but won't California be in the Teesdale book?

Just a word of warning in the Eggleshope area some of this land falls on the Raby empire and they are quite sensitive about mine explorers, visit the area by all means but my advise is to go incognito i.e.. helmets in bags, sorry if I'm telling you to suck eggs.

Try Moorebooks. The author updated & republished it a few years ago privately so it'll likely be in the Northern Pennines section rather than British Mining.

unfortunately this part of Teesdale was, I believe, used by the army for training during the last war; the buildings were shelled and flattened, the adits blown in and bulldozed. There remains a single shaft of the fellside above the old level which has been made safe 😠 using concreted-in railway lines - quite immovable!

By all means have a look up there, maybe worth including Wiregill on your itinerary as there are still plenty of remains (both above and below).

Would advise leaving it till after the grouse season. from experience, Raby gamekeepers are polite but firm....

Little Eggleshope, Wiregil and California, are mentioned in this memoir on P 148.
Dunham will also give NGR's for the levels, but as previously, mentioned you MUST be extremely watchful on Raby Estate's land.
At one time, before the right to roam act, they would give you written permission to walk the surface, but as I understand it this is now seldom granted.
However, most of their land does have maps posted showing where public footpaths are located.

California Level was open in the 1970s. I have a photo somewhere. Will find and post under that mine name.

my apologies, issues keeping brain in check. Teesdale book. Ive alway been interested in the links from the west side (wiregill levels) over to this and sharnberry area.

recently had a good wander into wiregill low level and into some of the workings in and above. Curious to know if anyone else had pushed ground in here?

Ive heard of the inherent problems with landowners i.e. raby estates but in an opposite view, myself and a fellow mine enthusiast parked within 20yds of wiregill low level, the gamekeeper was out doing rounds easily within sight range and didnt even bother coming over.

seems to be a vast area of workings and potential through trips with very little info or work carried out.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don''''''''t.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
