If anyone knows of any practising solicitors who have good knowledge and experience of dealing with mineral rights, and especially their relationship to liability for historic workings, please could they drop me a line or post here.

Not exactly what you are asking for, and you are possibly already aware but a copy of "History and Practice of the Law of Mines and Minerals" by Jean Cantlie Stewart.
But note the publication date of 1987 means that some of it is now out of date. So recommend reference to as below:

Bocardo v Star Energy 2010
Countess of Lonsdale v Tesco 2010
Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (Definition of mineral)

Roy,

Thank you for this. I do already have a copy of Cantile Stewart following previous references to it by you on here.

A quote from a solicitor who was handling (I am reluctant to use the words "dealing with" handling my house sale. There was an important piece of paper that she had omitted to send to the buyer's solicitor previously. Their solicitors had been on to her. My estate agent had been on to her about sending it. To no avail, so I got on to her. Her reply was priceless:-

"Well, its on my desk."

At that point words failed me but I wish I had said "well, it shouldn't be on your desk, it should be on their desk!"
I refrained from so doing as doubtless that would have delayed it a further week!

Maybe not a solicitor but Wardell Armstrong consultants act for many mineral owners. Their main office is in Stoke.
They do a lot of sorting out of messes in this field.

When we bought our present house the estate agent said that if one solicitor annoys another they will deliberately hold up procedings just to get back at each other. Sounds childish but I'm sure it's true.
