The main problems with PMR radios used in underground exploration is mainly down to the fact that it's basically line of sight and low power communication and the fact that ideally the antennas being used should be orientated in the same plane due to the fact that the electromagnetic wave being transmitted is polarized.

Sounds like you have the makings of a 'speaking tube' system already in-situ?

Edit: Is there a continuous pipe top to bottom?

We finished the work last year, so no hope of re-testing it, but as I remember the pipes stopped well before the level we were descending too. On of the guys said that he had got a much better signal when holding the unit very close to the pipe in the shaft, but it wasn't the sort of place to be threading yourself around the steel, as much of it was held on by friction. I think if the job had gone on for longer a cabled system would have been employed, but we finished before it really became an issue/anyone got squashed.
