Hello Steve - Wheal George was more than likely never worked even though a wheelpit was built, but the leat to feed the waterwheel was never completed. The site for this is just up from the confluence of Dead Lake on the right hand side of the Rattlebrook.
There's a big open gully running into the hillside on the opposite side of the Rattlebrook of Wheal George, which was known as Curbeam, Curr Beam and even Kerbeam dating 1788. - see below: -
Curr Beam Mine: - (Curbeam, Kerbeam) – To be disposed of, Two Thirty-Second Parts or Shares, in and throughout that rich Tin Mine called Curr Beam, situate in the Parish of Lidford, in the County of Devon; together with an equal right in all these extensive Tin Bounds and Mines of the Lidford Company, (of which these are part) the Bounds are fee and simple, in which are a great number of other Tin Loads, or Veins; and, in all probability, equally rich. There is now upwards of £200 worth of tin, at the surface for sale, the expenses of raising which did not exceed £30. There is also on the Mine, one large Double Stamping Mill, together with a Smithy, Dwellings for the men, &c., to which the purchaser will also be entitled; the Mine is now in such a state, that a clear profit of £300 per month may be produced from the 1st September; and from all appearances, this continue for a series of years. The Books of Accounts, specimens of the Ore, and further particulars may be had by applying at the Gloucester Coffee-house, Piccadilly, any day, from Twelve to Two. As the present Proprietors consist of men of great respectability, none but such will be accepted of.
August 2nd, 1788.
Now the Rattlebrook Mine is further up the Rattlebrook from Curbeam and extended into Scad Brook... there's buddles, settling-pits, shafts etc that can be seen in the vicinity and are below Bleak House. Up one of the gullies can be seen a tethering ring in a boulder...
Bleak House was also known as Dunnagoat Cottage at one point before acquiring the name of Rattlebrook Cottage, and later Bleak House... The stone came from a quarry of Higher Dunnagoat Tor.
Hope you and your wife find the above of interest.
Kind regards Tin Miner
