Morning, BBC1's Hidden Britain was worth a look last night. As if the gorgeous Ellie Harrison wasn't reason enough to be watching, there was a trip down a former silver mine at Coombe Martin in north Devon. I'm pretty ignorant about most metal mining areas outside the North Pennines so I never knew this existed. Apparently, it was last worked in the late 19th century and has been the subject of a big digging project. It will be on BBC iplayer I'm sure. Colin.

Thanks Col.

My friend the late John Harrison (DDMS) was a regular visitor to that area in the late 1980's and was on very good terms with the then owner, who had done a tremendous amount of work on the shaft.

Unfortunately the owner subsequently met with a fatal accident, falling down the shaft on which he'd spent so much time and effort.

The mine is listed in the AN database, but with the alternate spelling "Combe Martin"

The whole programme was worth watching (apart from Ellie Harrison). Drake's Island with the Napoleonic fortifications (and tunnels), Napps Cave and Combe Martin plus the tank range on Dartmoor with it's own railway.
Malc.
Rusted and ropey, Dog eared old copy
Vintage and classic or just plain Jurassic
All words to describe me.

Oops, sorry for mis-spelling the name. I was curious as we've often holidayed around here and I was non the wiser - thinking you had to get over the Tamar (with a few well known exceptions) to get in the metals belt. I found Drake's Island very interesting too; it would be a shame if they do build a hotel on it - more heritage sacrificed in the name of profit!

Walking on thin ice 😉.

Loads of mining in Devon: bear in mind that the Cornubian ore field takes in West Devon and Dartmoor. Copper, Tin, Lead, Silver, Tungsten, Arsenic, Iron, Byrites and this is before we get onto bulk minerals.

In fact a few things Cornwall didnt have, such as micaceous haematite around Bovey and the Bideford coal/culm. Not sure if barytes were ever worked in Cornwall but probably not commercially.

A user by the name of "Gary" posted something about this mine a while back... hopefully he's still around to provide more info!

Well, if you know Plymouth you'll also know that Drakes Island has lived on a shoe-string for years - several things have been tried without much success. It's too small for a visitor-centre and if people were charged to go there probably few Plymothians would make it a regular haunt, so it will just decay. A hotel is probably the only thing that might keep it alive, but I wouldn't hold my breath even for that!!

HIGHLY doubtful permission for the development mentioned would be forthcoming, even if the funding was.

Years ago a planning application was submitted and the council were in favour except that an environmental impact study had not been done and the council feared some environmental group would challenge their decision in the courts, so reluctantly, application was refused.

All this is, or was, on the web somewhere.

Since then its been regularly visited by the URBEX groups, quite a bit on 28DL
