Hi guys, can anyone shed some light on this mine dropped the shaft with the stone slabs on in the 80s but thirteen ladders wouldn't reach the bottom i was about 60 feet short but could see water running down in the bottom ,i always wounder whats down in this place ,all i can find out is it last worked in the 50s there is an other shaft over the hill with an old rusty tripod on it with a lock on the lid ,a young lad called tony told us his dad worked in the mine years ago can't remember his last name so long ago now, i hope you can help me. cheers .Keith Rimmer.:)

Sounds like you were talking to Tony Wood, contact him at Peak District Mines Historical Society where he leads a number of mine walks.
When talking about Portaway just be carefull as there are two mines with the same name, Enthovens Portaway now mostley buried and the one with the small headgear which was Eric Fishers Portaway Mine which may now be owned by Deepwood mining.

I'm also very keen to see the Portaway Pipe - it was discussed as a possible photo-site for the book I did on the Thornhills with Jim Rieuwerts, but access contacts were too vague and time was too tight and it got left. Burning Drake was a great alternative, but these workings were meant to be vast and complex and not well documented. If access is still possible, I would definitely be up for a look!

Thanks guys, now i want to delve deeper, its not the Erick fisher one this is over the hill nearer the old barn not far from the road it has massive stone slabs over the shaft ,i will go and have a word with the farmer if he is still going , now i will see if i can get a winch organised and will post it up if anyone fancy's a trip p m me and let me know ,buy the way the farmer told us about a mine down the road going towards winster called steps mine its on the 1840 map he told me when he was a lad you could go in the adit at the side of the road and go down a spiral staircase for hundreds of feet how true i do not know, well thanks all .

Its part of the same mine from the headgear up the hill to Leadmines farm which used to be the way the North Staffs group entered the system.
