I like the way the report states:
"Eagle-eyed Manchester residents reported the unexplained phenomenon to the Environment Agency (EA) this afternoon after spotting water in the River Irk looking distinctly darker than usual."

Eagle-eyed? Manchester must have the most myopic raptors in the world!
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

Should they perhaps adopt the approach of going upstream until they find clear water?

When we had a galvanising line at British Steel in Corby, even a fairly small acid spill would make the dissolved iron in the effluent stream from the site precipitate out looking just like this. The houses backing onto the central stream of the Willow Brook soon picked the phone up.

Same at north end of Harecastle tunnel in the 90s.

Edit: Appears it's still orange so perhaps reed bed plans fell through.

Same people originally to blame for both.
The Gilbert brothers & Brindley.
I say prosecute 'em ::)

That was it Duck Orange NOT Orange duck ...

Mind the slightly discoloured ducks around the Delph in Worsley probably offended the sensibilities of some of the Nobbier types that live nearby .
