The only mine on 6 inch maps near the source is Low Compton Colliery.

Just east of St Georges road near where the railway tracks join up.
just below St georges in bold, near Collyhurst.

Right next to the brick field. Problem is none of the reports seem to indicate the furthest upstream the pollution was observed on the day.
