Am staying in Leyburn (Yorkshire) for a week and enjoy seeking out mines but arthritis and back problems limit what I can do. Can someone suggest one or two interesting walk in mines within about 1 mile of vehicular access (like Cwmorthin)
Thanks:)

Grinton, and of course Surrender Smelt Mills are an absolute Must-See if you are so close.

There's not much underground in that area which is easy or forgiving, its all roof-falls and deep water I'm afraid.

There are some stone mines at Simonside, near Hawes, which are dry and walkable

Maybe someone could suggest something over Cobscar, which is not an area I know.

cheers MARK

Absolutely gorgeous area but nearly everything within 20 miles involves, as suggested, long walks, water, crawling or is generally hard-going.

Often all at the same time.

If you want somewhere like Cwmorthin (but without the litter...) one of the showcaves might be your best bet. White Scar or somewhere perhaps.

The Smelt Mill at Keldheads is virtually roadside.

Old Gang Mill is very good, a little over a mile, but flat going.

Underground doesnt tend to be much easy going, Booze Wood ain't too bad, not over welly depth, although i've heard talk of bad air at the very end.

Last time I was at Cobscar some local busybody must have seen me and phoned the police. Up he rolls in his noddy car and asks me what I'm doing. Erm, I'm in the Yorkshire Dales in hiking gear with a rucksack on my back....take a guess. Still, it got the poor sod out of the office.

Up and down Gunnerside would have been my choice for most bang-per-buck.

But as its at least a 5 mile round trip, so I thought it would be outside the remit.
