A few years ago,on a walk round some old lime kilns in Scotland we found a large (which we thought)was some kind of smelting pot (my son thought it was a large bell)rough diameter of 1m and a depth of around 1.5m.
On return to the old workings last week we found that it had been removed:curse::curse: I never had my camera so couldnt get a pic.
Does anyone no what we might have found??

Could you supply a location to give an idea of the type of kiln in use?

Hi Morlock, the kilns are in Midlothian and i think the limeworks were called "Currie Lee" (up near Chrichton Castle).

Looks like it was disused in 1895 if this is the place? (Top LH corner).

Not sure what smelting would be done at a lime kiln, especially on that small scale.

Maybe it was just a hot water tub like you see in plenty of places?

Don't think so, I was thinking more along the lines of a bit of ironmongery associated with the kiln.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
