Sellegan smelting works at Carnkie was the last large smelting works to close in Cornwall. It always had an air of secrecy about it and only one photo of the inside is known to exist. Recently we heard that a local farmer had a painting showing men and women at work inside. We arranged to have a look but he insisted when we arrived that it was of a foundry in Redruth. I took a couple of quick photos anyway (very awkward as it was on a wall on a dark stairwell and the painting is badly in need of a clean).
Recently we have been having second thoughts and I sent a copy of the photo to Bryan Earl and he said it definitely isn’t a foundry and very likely was Sellegan. Unfortunately the photo isn’t very good but if it is Sellegan it is of historical interest.

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.
