Yes but Darmstadt is where the control centre is, not the quarry I think.
They're using the quarry to illustrate what they think the surface of the comet is like not what it's made of. Hmm..... metamorphic comets

That does look slatey. In fact it slmost looks Welsh slatey. Not sure what the geology around Darmstadt is.

Well, NOT Welsh slatey - a chance it might be German slatey, I suppose.

If it's not local to where the article was posted from (i.e. not Germany) then from the purple and green banding it looks a bit Dinorwic-ish, back of Allt Ddu? But then again it looks like pretty much any disused surface slate quarry 😉

Oh, I got zilch results for that as a specific search!

There was reference to nearby quarrying for bituminous shale with a picture of a distinctly non-slatey landscape.

Yes I found stuff on limestone fossil pits, but not slate.

Yep - it's down and safe. Awesome news. Hopefully some photos in a few hours.

Very probably near the RKM (Riekratermuseum) - they have close connections to the Max Planck Institute. They are responsible for the development of the dust-analyzer of COSIMA (Comentary Secondary Ion Mass Analyzer) and it was tested in quarries close to the museum.

Another possibility is it could be in the Taunus, there are slate quarries there. Both the Taunas and Darmstadt are in Hesse.

Also the Hunsruck isn't too far away, some famous slate quarries there (for fossils), incidentally with underground workings as well (featured in the film/series 'Heimat')
