I'm somewhat dubious about the caption, 'Woodhams Yard, Barry (in 2010)', for the last photo. My impression was that the last steam loco left Woodhams' yard about 1990.

Unless you are trying to recover overexposure, HDR is something that is generally overdone. Modern image processing has loads of tools that should only be used sparingly, particularly sharpening and noise reduction.

As to converting digital colour into black & white - the trick is to convert in Photoshop Lightroom and use the colour sliders to adjust contrast and gradation - yes, you can still edit the colour channels although what you have on the screen is B&W.

All these were shot in colour:

I quite like B&W* and can't see that creating black & white images digitally is any more contrived than choosing to buy B&W film (perhaps even rather less pretentious! ::) ) but those Flickr photo don't really move me. To my eyes they look computer generated.

I'm sure I've provided a link to it before but this site has a large number of black & white photographs on it:
http://www.hfinster.de/StahlArt/index.html

They aren't arty (or overbaked!) but personally I find them of a great deal more interest than those citiscapes which do err on the side of clichรฉ somewhat. ๐Ÿ™‚

To my eyes, at least, so much better than those cold contrived cityscape photos!

I do like a "natural" B&W shot, hell I like all B&W if it's done well.

I won't link them up here (Some decidedly NSFW model shots), but look up Thorn Button (flickr, Google+ 500pix etc). Knows how to use shadows very well. Even my missus approves of them, and she has no interest in photography whatsoever.

:offtopic:Maybe slightly off topic, but bought a book recently showcasing birds of paradise. Was a bit disappointed with the colour photos, They appreared completely oversaturated so the bright blocks of colour drowned out detail. I wonder how much photoshopping finds its way into published books, if that's what the problem was :offtopic:

Back to mining:

These have been linked to here before, but worth drawing attention to them again I think

I must say I was very impressed indeed with these B/W images of South Crofty in its working days ;D

Not really a fair comparison, those are all pictures of mining heritage which is something we are all interested in.

More than anything I'm saying that it is NOT as easy as just putting a B&W filter over an image to create an exceptional B&W piece, you have to put hours of effort in. Yes people do just do it to make a bad photo look somewhat better but don't fob off all digital black and white because some people do that.

I get the same feeling about digital images being posted in black and white! :curse:
It's not olde worlde.
Skillful use of black and white negative film is an art form but digital b/w is as bad as overdone hdr.
(Yes I am a grumpy old git.) :smartass:

I think digi b/w is still a way off the quality that it's possible to get from a good b/w print but it's still worth doing and can give some great images. Not to look olde worlde but sometimes colour really has nothing much to add to a pic.

There are a lot of people who have a passion for B&W photography - enough of them to make this camera a resounding success for Leica (who almost went bust only a few years ago).

Why spend money on a Leica when you can get a cheaper Lumix and get the same results.
Or buy my Mamiya 645 kit with enlarger and get better results

Why spend six grand on a pushbike you only use once a fortnight? Because it makes you look the part & have money to burn I think...
