Oh crap.

Red Vein??? can you enlighten non-Faceplant-enabled technophobes like myself?

And watch Allendale, the Big Yellow Toys are having a field day up there.

Red vein is on the right in the quarry as you proceed down the track towards Stanhopeburn Fluorite and reach West Pasture. Two nice stone arched adits but completely run in a few feet inside. Basically, all we have lost is the arched entrances.

Hi Mark red vein adits were on the right hand side just before you get to west pastures

Ah, right. Gotcha. I know the levels but not the names.

I heard WP was on the radar for some serious mineral harvesting by 'someone', vehemently opposed by 'someone else'. The other two levels are probably on the same lease, given the proximity. Just hope its not a developing trend.

I believe, simply as features of the landscape, mine entrances are worth saving if possible, even if they don't go anywhere now. I just wish we had a single original mine entrance in Surrey! All buried, destroyed, or drastically altered with the passage of time.

Yes, they were solid, neat, and a complement to the landscape; inevitably inviting but went nowhere. No reason for them to not be there 😞

It's not about mineral collecting, or risk, fluffy animals or thinking of the children. It's about little barky dogs who want to fight.

Sadly, caving and mine exploring seem to attract these types, who then ****** up history/geology/fun for everyone.

Even more sadly, he is right.

So now Stanhopeburn Adit has been burried as well.

We should not really be posting all this on a public forum in case the bat people get to see it and the landowner gets into trouble.

I recently took a friend in WP (2 months back)and reported back then that the entrance timbering between the outer door and the inner swing door was collapsing, also the hill side outside the entrance has also had a collapse.

Is it possible that the entrance has just been buried by a continuation of that collapse, we had a very strong feeling back then it was going and fairly soon.

No its been welded shut, the two Red Vein and Stanhopeburn adits are the buried ones.

That's a dam shame nice little mine WP, good for newbies as it was an easy one, with the wet bit at the end.

Having taken a look yesterday, the Red Vein entrances have been buried using a JCB or similar.
Would have thought that this could not happen without the landowner's permission?

Following further research I have retracted this statement for being inaccurate, apologise if any issue has been caused with anyone, I was only going on what has been told to me and since then further info came to light that sheds a different angle on things.

Think that the only reason WP is welded shut as there is holes in the door for the bats . stanhopeburn adits you could only get a few yards in , red vein adits the one on the left was run in about 6 ft or so in, and the one straightforward was a good few yards in before it was run in but these have had soil/rubble tipped in and over the adits now .

So no more crate loads of yellow sparklies going stateside then! Well at least the little furry critters will be left undisturbed. 🙂

I suppose the concept of leaving minerals in situ for others to see and enjoy is similarly chumpish...

Mind, I can't see that happening.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
