Just to compare and contrast Jim's photo and a known contemporary pic of the portal:

The steel braces atop the uprights
The longitudinal wood roof supports above the lintel
however the rail branch to the North seems to support it being HW.
also, the sunlight in Jims photo is striking the portal at about 45deg, seems a bit high for an east facing aspect! Perfect for a south-facing portal though.
just food for thought, I'm willing to be proved wrong! Does JM's photo pre-date a reconstruction of the portal??
