Any photos that may have been taken were most likely lost in the fire at Scorrier House at the beginning of the last century

Having gone off on a total tangent from dead matey, there are a few books with some bits in. The mining magazine from about 1935/37 has a few pictures of United in connection with the Poldory works....as does "Gwennap" the local history book.

Even Whiteworks, which was a relatively modern prospect has only a couple of photos (again in mining magazine). Wheal Jane is a different matter. There are a fair load of those.

I will hold my hand up and say that I very very very nearly fell down Pearce's Engine Shaft a few years ago (this has subsequently been properly fenced).

In my opinion, Consols was the apex of Cornish Mining and everything before or since has been a sideshow. DGC is widely regarded as the richest copper lode, but the production from Wheal Virgin from 1757 to 1819 is ignored in the calculations.

If you look at the old sections, there are 2 colours, ground already stoped and stuff the new company did. The amount is phenomenal.

I have asked this question many times and I wonder what lies in the buller/trounson collection. Since the earliest photograph of Cornish mining (that perranporth one at about 1850), it follows that there was a good 20 years of continued massive mining at United/Consols and I for one would be very interested in seeing some pictures of it. The Pool area was snapped to death, but Gwennap seems to have largely escaped it, which is a shame, because it's one of the most interesting areas in Cornwall IMO.

What Perranporth photo are you referring too?

The one in the Trounson/Bullen collection which shows the Wheal Leisure engine houses and one of the Perran St George engine houses....I think the caption is "This could date from the early 1840s". I'm not sure the leisure engines made it onto the 1880 25" maps (without looking, which is lots of effort)

Wheal Maid death cyclist David Alderson 'was murdered'

A 72-year-old cyclist whose body was found in a disused Cornish copper mine was murdered, police believe.

When David Alderson was found at Wheal Maid, near Carharrack, earlier this month, Devon and Cornwall Police initially thought the Falmouth man had fallen accidentally.

They have now begun a murder inquiry and say they are looking for 33-year-old Kevin Cooper from Redruth.

So, you have murdered someone and you are up at Consols. I suspect the murderer of not being quite 'zackly.

If you put a body down several of the shafts up there, like Davies, Harvey's North, Pearce's, they would have never ever ever found the body.

For our northern viewers, not quite zackly = dim.

It was never ever known as Wheal Jewel Pound. Simply, "The Pound".

The pound is not a place of residence. I thought Roy was making a kind of slur on the chap's residence. I'm sure there are some very nice people from wj.

I've been digitising a lot of my old photos recently, and I came across this one marked on the back "Wheal Maid" 1988, but it doesn't seem right.
Can anyone confirm please?
