Seem to be very pricey. Can anyone recommend one which can determine between different metals and has a high sweep area and can detect at a considerable depth. Budget maximum about £250. :happybday:

I seem to remember they are about £300, but the Pioneer 505 is very good. A number of people I know use them.

Try Maplin Electronics... They do one for about £80 quid and given the 2000 finds in 3 years ranging from roman to modern coins inc full discrimination I cant fault it!

I've just got a Maplin Detector it seems OK but I've yet to put it to a practical test.

Disclosure - I work for Maplin.
The £80-£120 ones are pretty decent, but if You are serious about it, then spending a little more will get you a *LOT* more detector. Better depth and discrimination of metal so you don't have to dig up every buried 80's ringpull you come across.
This is the one I was on about.

We *used* to sell them, you may find one in your local store.

A word of advice: don't wear steel toe capped boots when using the thing.
I speak from experience. 😞
