Would have - to me - made sense. Not at the opposite end of the country to Sellafield. The stuff needs storimg somewhere, although of it actually was under my house I might feel dofferently!

Well perhaps you might like to start a campaign to get your local councils to volunteer as hosts. 😉 After all the the geology of your neck of the woods is considered among the better potential host formations in the country.

And Simon, the stuff currently stored at Sellafield is 70% of the UK's waste not just Cumbria's. There are c.35 nuclear sites in the UK, quite a few of them "down south". The repository was planned to take not only the current Sellafield stock but the other 30% held across the UK and everything arising in the future - more than doubling what we have now. It's a national problem so logically the site selection should be focussed on the best national geology not on which locality can be easiest bribed by "massive community benefits".

I'd be more than happy to have a dump like this nearby. I am sure the same can't be said for the vast majority of the locals through.
Although I am holding out for the Shale Gas extraction that might happen here.

The issue with it being a national problem is that is used as an excuse for it to go elsewhere 'ooh - it's a national problem, the nation should deal with it!'. Well, we could grind it up and spray it evenly over the land I suppose.

And to your point about the logical answer is to find the best location - no, all we need is a sufficiently good location. Any better is wasted.

I'd have no problem with a storage facility near me either, I grew up near Taunton so Hinckley Point is just down the road from me, there are just as many issues with an active station as there will be with this, what counts is favourable geology though just because the ground was good enough to build a power station on doesn't make it suitable for long term underground storage.
The problem with the council refusing this now is that it was the only site that had even reached that stage, the thing takes years and years to construct and if started now it will be ready in good time to meet our needs, this refusal will delay it again and we may be caught short, action needs to be taken soon one way or another

What the council decides ain't worth a damn, if that's the solution to storage then it will be done, HMG has the ultimate power.
Look at the proposed HS2 rail route, it is pretty straight for most of the way until it gets to the Knutsford area where the preffered route takes an obvious detour, the detour convieniently bypasses most of the chancellors stomping ground and his supporters.

Can't say that I noticed any obvious detour when I looked at the plans. The proposed route cuts through the middle of Osborne's constituency and will no doubt be the subject of much wailing and gnashing of teeth by the residents.

It does, it bends around the Rostherne/Warburton area therefore bypassing Knutsford, the most logical route would be along or near to the existing Crewe to Manchester line but that would upset all the party supporters who live around Wilmslow/ Alderly Edge area.
