Re Cwmystwyth Level Fawr, route to Coffin Level above the skipway.

Following a recent incident, it is felt that there is a need to warn explorers using this route to approach the ladder at the top of a very loose slope of rocks by taking a diversion through the adjacent chamber and approaching the ladder from behind

At our recent AGM we planned our program of future works for the next 12 months.

1/ Gateway Signage. This is important as a few visitors don't even know that its a mine they are looking at! It also confirms ownership by CMT and implies that the site is managed..

2/ Clearing of the informal parking area opposite the mill to incorporate parking and farm turning circle. This is off the SAM area but part of the SSSI, so authorisation will be required. It has been the site of informal tipping and removal of road bed spoil, and is a mess. Also a good place to site an interpretation plinth opposite the mill. The one opposite the pottery will be replaced as the board there is damaged.

Interpretation boards have already been placed on the archaeologically important site of Copa Hill, and a hard plinth at Nant yr onnen adjacent to the road.

3/ Refurbishment of the portal of Lefel Fawr with a replica of the original plaque.

There is a lot to be done there but at least its a start. The mill area north of the road is a mess but a lot more involved when it comes to remediation as its an archaeologically important area with a strong likelihood that much would be uncovered.

I also have to report that Freemans Adit has been reopened by nature in the form of a collapse of ground into the level. As it poses a health and safety risk as well as a danger to livestock it has been temporarily covered over pending reinforcement of the ground and a proper access lid. A heavy mine ladder for access has already been made up and put on side.
Its actually only a blind heading and does not lead anywhere. Its more of geological interest that anything else.

Freemans Adit - remediation is almost completed after a lot of work reinforcing the ground and capping with concrete. When completed I will post pictures etc. It is currently accessible, but please leave something over the access lid which currently has frame only installed.

Freemans Adit, collapse remediation.

Late in 2019 there was a run of ground into Freemans Level after heavy rain. This is immediately on the leat and posed a Health and Safety issue as the leat is often used as a footpath and the hole could not be seen until you were immediately on it. There was also a threat to grazing stock.

The hole was about two metres into the hill side by about one metre wide and about three metres deep. The outer side and left hand side were loose and overhung, the back was a rock slope up into overburden, the right hand side a solid rockface.

Using a ladder it was possible to gain entry to the level which is a trial to a chamber with a borehole and contains a few minor artefacts.

In view of the safety considerations and the fact that the sides would run causing loss of access to the level and part of the leat an immediate remediation was undertaken. This consisted of building up the loose sides and backfilling, pouring and concrete base and building up at the back, and capping with steel reinforced concrete with an entry hatch. A fixed ladder was also installed for easy access.

All of the above described work was within the confines of the naturally formed hole with awareness of the Scheduled Ancient Monument and SSSI status of the site.

The trust has received the following document from Natural Resources Wales and the Coal Authority.

Its basically a remediation scheme to address the pollution from the site, but also carries a lot of ancillary spin offs for site improvement. The basis for these is the management and Protection plan which was based on my original wish list.
