Hi have received news from Mathew Parkes, that due to a lack of Irish members, not willing to participate in this important Irish Mining Group, he is proposing to wind the Society up.
Those participants from this side of water who attended last year’s NAMHO’s Irish conference no doubt will be very disappointed with this news!
I am just drawing site members to this possibility.

That is really sad, I had some very good visits to mines over there, some enthusiasts were really keen, but hampered by their government not wishing to conserve the mining heritage

What sad news, the Irish NAMHO was a fantastic event and it seemed like a very enthusiastic group.

I guess if you can't go underground a lot of interest will drop off. 😢

It is very sad I was one of the UK founder members, unfortunately they have suffered what many organisations in the Caving and Mining world have and that is a lack of recruitment. With all sorts of changing circumstances of the original group it has gone the way other groups will

There have been quite a few success stories in terms of conservation and interpretation of the mining heritage such as Glendalough, Tankardstown, Allihies, to some extent Avoca and of course Glengowla show mine that didn't exist when the society was set up
