I've only recently found out that "Graces Guide" has digitized a large range of "The Engineer" from 1862 to 1926, allbeit with some gaps. It's a fascinating treasure trove of Engineering from the steam and water era into the Electric era. OK, not directly underground, though there are articles and supplements on mining engineering, and pumping and other machines make regular appearances, as does the Victorian channel tunnel project (Somewhat scathingly!).

So far I've found an article on the Hunter Saw, a patent slate dresser, various Davey pumping engines, various narrow gauge locomotives and a turbine driven pump at Welsh Slate Company (predeccesor of Oakeley) to name but a few.

If you're into nistorical engineering or machines this is another great online resource.

The map is the territory - especially in chain scale.

I can't seem to find the article on the Hunter Saw. Any clues please?

I printed the page off without making a note - it is under W.F.Cooke (Hunter's partner) and refers to a works in London. I'll post the rest when I can find where I put the print out! I suspect it was one of the un-indexed issues.

Cheers

P.S. Ffestiniog Railway locomotive enthusasts can find an engraving of the single Fairlie "Taliesin" in the August 24th 1877 issue, and three sections in the October 19th 1877 issue.
