Any idea what through trip covers the greatest vertical distance?

Gentlewoman's to Youd's is a contender I'd imagine?
JH to Speedwell as well though that would be stretching the definition of a mine to its very limits I imagine....

Magpie shaft to sough tail, about 150metres in a mile. Possible but permission RARELY granted.
Some of the trips round Ecton could be contenders.

The Croesor shaft is 100m exactly, so if you then did the through trip into Rhosydd, I expect you'd be near 150m

As for distance, both the Great Swaledale Traverse and the Devis to Keldheads throughtrips will be over 4 miles (when they are dug open!!)

That's unfortunately no longer possible, a major collapse between the shaft and Butts vein junction has blocked the final section of the sough.

Agricola - coming up Red Lion shaft for a pint is a waste of time unless you want to walk to the Three Stags or the Bowling Green, the Red Lion has been closed for several years now!

It never looked open the last time I ventured past which is some years ago, and was told that even when the pub was open it wasn't the place to go.

If the sough had been cleared beyond bolt wood you might have been able to walk from Steaming Shaft to a shaft close to the Miners (Arms ?) in Winster.
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

Peter, would that be Bedlam's bank by any chance? (always thought that getting lost in there would make for a rather long round trip!)
Is there a possibility that there are compararble or even larger firestone workings waiting to be discovered in the area but on land where there are as yet no access agreements?

Its impossible to be sure. Possibly under the downs at Reigate, or east of Bedlams, at the other corner of the old Chaldon parish where another quarry is known to have been worked.

Somebody has tried to dig Keldhead in the past but were seemingly stopped by the National Park. The problem is that there are a few collapses very close to the entrance and the only place to dump spoil is outside of the mine which the Park objected to.

Slightly unusually for the northern dales, the level is in the bottom of a main dale, almost roadside and near houses.

If you can be bothered to hunt it down there was an article about it in (I think) the Observer Gardening Supplement, that bible of all Northern undergroundness...

i made that sign for theon going california dig on grinton moor! it wasnt the national park that stopped us it was english heritage,its fine to dig it but we were unable to tip the spoil outside the mine and with only about 100 yards to the dig was pointless,the mine was dug by an idiot and his brother over ten years ago with reinforced mesh,concrete and spoil on top in bags which didnt last and is now one hell of a tangled mess,they say the digs about 30 yards long and another not far after,so i wont say its impossible,lets just say virtually impossible!! 😠
