If you are planning on watching "Birdsong", part 1 being broadcast on Sunday evening, you may be interested to know that some of the sound effects in the sappers' tunnels scenes were recorded in the Godstone quarries to get a real underground confined space effect. It was a fascinating day. We recorded footsteps at walking and running pace, bodies being dragged around, spoil being shovelled, water trickling, heavy breathing (don't ask!) and lots of other incidental noises.

Cheers Peter, hadn't heard anything about them doing this.

The publicity has been pretty dire, I must say. I only spotted it today on the BBC site and I have been checking on and off for a week or two. Sadly I am out of the UK this weekend so I really hope it's going on iPlayer.

There's a clip on YouTube but the BBC don't appear to have got round to making a proper page for it.

Don't know who the actor is but he looks like he's been prematurely embalmed...

This is what I found earlier today - the page has had a lot more added to it since then.

I doesn't look like they even know when the second part is going out yet!

Yes - I look forward to hearing more of the heavy breathing we recorded - in the TUNNELS, that is. 😉

Did they use the heavy breathing edit for the full on sex scene? It wasn't the male actor's breathing as he had his mouth full! 😮

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
