Sir Rowley Birkin......He reminds me so very much of someone I knew many years ago, now sadly departed, had tales of Schooldays at Repton, serving in the Indian Army on horseback, playing cricket (for Cheshire?) dating a certain Miss Dempster heiress to the Elder Dempster shipping line and sorting out the personal fortunes of the Sultan of Oman.
Bertie Wooster territory without a doubt. Times gone by.....

don't know about Bertie Wooster so much. There are quite a few Rowley Birkins still littering the more isolated corners of the oil industry... a really good one will have the ability to carry off stories of such absurdity or extravagant implausibility as to be worth the suspension of disbelief for their own sake...

Or Marty Feldman - amazingly popular here in Germany about 25 years ago (Benny Hill still is)

ah, German humour....... HO!HO!HO!

I was in Germany not so long ago. In the course of an evenings' ( paralysingly boring ) tv while waiting for an early flight, I saw The Harry Enfield Show ( dubbed into German, which I don't speak ) twice in one evening, including his character "Jurgen the German".

What the overdub actually said, I can't imagine...

Strangely enough, there's a tradition of watching a Freddy Frinton sketch called "Dinner for One" on New Year's Eve in Germany. And it's not overdubbed either!

When you total up the viewing figures over the years, it's the most watched show on any of the German TV channels.

To be honest, it's VERY funny, too

sounds like "Arthur Atkinson" on The Fast Show....

I thought you were making that up, but...

No way. We only used to make things up in seismic data reprocessing - need a fault, you get one. Need a hotspot - you get one.
I've been asked many a time to put them into old 2D lines to tie them in with 3D survey data.
Western Geco closed our offices in Hanover in 2003 and, after a 7-month stint as a consultant for the reprocessing of hundreds of kilometres of 2D over geothermal prospects in Tuscany, (business trips to Pisa are wonderful!) I am now happily running my own translation business here in Germany.

Well, that's what it says in the final report.

"we applied an empirical process to extrapolate reflectivity coefficients in the frequency-wave number domain with a view to preserving amplitude relationships and finalised the correlated data set with a horizon dependent, cross-line, predictive deconvolution and subsequent FX-filtering to reduce multiples, enhance continuity and emphasise micro-faulting in the target area"
(which is absolute rubbish)

Funny - now I'm working predominantly for the marketing and advertising industry, I hardly notice the difference.)
