I visit it fairly regularly and as PDMHS conservation officer I'm deeply concerned at your suggestion that the idiot who barred the lid open instead of removing the bolts with an allen key is a society member. Please could you PM me some details about this, as if it can be proved that this person has done this, I will ask council to expel them from the society

Holy Smoke!!

I used to work up there on the old rail track, cleaning and restoration work as a teen (groundwork conservation), i never knew that there was a old mine up there.

I spent many hours looking at the old mill, and walking around it, what type of mine was up there ? and how long was it open for?.

Cheers.

It was a lead mine, which was in operation by 1653 (it was mentioned as being worked in the will of a Derbyshire lead merchant who owned shares in it at this date). Working continued intermittently through the 18th and 19th centuries, the last period of working was in the 1870s - a new level was driven above the railway line at this time, though it has long since run in. If you're driving from Tideswell down into the dale and you know where to look, you can clearly see the line of the vein coming down the hillside.
