I have just received my members copy of this book. The authors have completed a fantastic job in covering a wide geographic area and listing both the history and lay out of the major sites. Adits are given their NGR s and the publication contains many maps and figures as someone who has spent a lot of time in record offices I can only be very impressed with the high standard of their work.
In my opinion this is essential reading for any North of England Mine explorer.
A publication of this quality only comes around every 5 years or so this is the one to buy and read.
If there is any criticism no underground exploration is described.

Which reminds me that I still haven't renewed my subscription this year...

Think Ian Tyler has a book due out covering similar ground which might pay greater regard to the underground workings.

Not seen Ian for some time but would not be surprised if he is working on a similar book.He did a lot of research in this area in the 80's & 90's.

There might be political reasons for not describing underground acess, there is an entirely different approach in the early monographs both of P.D.M.H.S. and Northern Mine.
In recent CAT reports there is an account of the exploration undertaken.but little on no mention of the mine's entrance!

Regarding Ian's book on the Pennies, at his last mine walk a couple of Sundays ago, he was saying its still working on his book, but woud not be drawn on a publishing date - suppose he is still finding more stuff.

Ian is out this Sunday with one of his "new" Pennine walks - this one is on Coal Mines, Quarries, Tindale Spelter that made up Lord Carlisle's Naworth Collieries etc, (not far from Brampton / Carlisle).

Will be a good chance to see what new stuff he has found in the area, and to meet old friends etc.
