Right then :)

All the calendars have been sold; 120 of them this year.

Profit from this year's sales is (this may have been mentioned ;)) going to a fund to pay for steel for the Cwmorthin adit. Subject to necessary permissions from the landowner and in conjunction with the FoC your own Vanoord has offered to have his workshops weld up steel frames.

If the project goes ahead periodic updates will be posted. If it cannot go ahead due to access issues then a vote will be taken on a suitable alternative beneficiary(ies).

So, profit:

Sales:

120 Calendars: £1,754.50

Costs:

Print run 1 (100 copies): £647.43
Print run 2 (20 copies): £134.13
Postage costs: £231.40
PayPal fees: £66.55

TOTAL PROFIT £674.99

Thank you to everybody who bought calendars and made it a success.

Merchandise Profits

The question has been asked once or twice about profit from merchandise sales (t shirts and mugs). This was also being sold to raise funds for the Friends of Cwmorthin to go towards insurance and general costs.

The merchandise didn't sell particularly and made a fair sized loss - this I'm covering, it won't come out of any other fund raising activities.

I felt it important that the FoC got something from it though, so sent a cheque to the FoC for £120 a few months back; this being the profit element of what actually sold. This seemed the fairest thing all round to do - people who bought stuff were expecting it to raise something for the FoC.

The remainder of the merchandise has been marked down to cost price and any that does sell will go back towards paying the original production costs - which I'm sure in time will be covered.

£895 should buy a fair bit of steel.

What's the plan, suitable scrap price steel or more ambitious fabricated and galvanised?

Indeed it has... I'm not bitching about it, I didn't think that much would be raised.

Fabricated and painted. Galvanising is only going to get knocked off and add significantly to the cost.

There needs to be a bit of design work and a bit of head-scratching before it's finalised though.

Calendars have always been pretty effective fund raisers, and always been well supported by site members

A breakdown of previous years is below.

It's fair to say I think there will be one or more different causes supported next year for a bit of variety.

2010

Total profit: £451.49

To Kelly Mine Preservation Society: £153.60 (33 / 97 sales)
To Cumbria Ores Mine Rescue Unite: £297.89 (64 / 97 sales)

2009

Total profit: £489.31

To Friends of Cwmorthin: £289.80
To North Wales Cave Rescue: £205.51

2008

Total profit: £429.34

To Friends of Cwmorthin: £450.00

For those us us who (happily) contributed to the fund but haven't been to Cwmorthin for a few years and don't have any plans to go any time soon how bad is the adit? In danger of total collapse or just bits dropping off here and there?

The adit is alright at the moment. We did the original repairs with pine tree trunks which have a limited lifespan, particularly with how wet it gets in Lake Level adit. The timbers have been in for several years now.
The long term plan was always to replace the timber with steel framework as funds allowed.
This allows the adit to be preserved long term.

As a short term? expediency you could use a different timber.
Pitch pine is #1, but second to that is larch. When cut it is easily discernable from ordinary pine by its redness in the exposed cut.
Quite a bit about at the moment.......
