yes,although i only got accepted as a member a little over a year and a half ago,they unearthed the right hand side and made good,yes we are very hard to contact,ive been going underground now for over 10 years im also a member of kmrg(keldheads mine research group)which i joined in 2002,theres only 5 of us,whereas about 14 in ymcg

no,never heard of swinstone brow,im only interested in swaledale,arkengarthdale,apedale and wensleydale mines,teesdale and weardale at a push,abandoned this dig in november but hoping to go back in a few weeks,i ll let you know when and the progress,if we get anywhere!

Thats in Swaledale near the Grinton Smelt mill. British Mining 51 calls it Swinston Brow Level.

Best of luck with dig, look forward to hearing if you get anywhere with it.

nope still never heard of swinstone,the one we are digging is california,further up past smelt mill is devis,above that is doctors,to the right up the gill is how level and coopers,below main road is water level and back up the road towards leyburn at the 1st cattle grid to your left about 300yards walkdown over the moor is west level,further up the road is haggs gill which is basicaly knackered and then m.o.d land,maybe people have other names for the mines,which is fair enough :blink:

We just know the same place by different names, the British Mining book refers to it as Swinston Brow Level.

I've checked the OS map from 1895 and indeed they call it California Level.
