We cannot let the 150th anniversary of one of the worst British mining disasters pass without some comment and remembrance.
The death toll was 204 men and boys, some as young as 10, most of whom suffocated because the beam of the pumping engine broke and fell into the colliery's only shaft completely blocking it.
Within two years legislation required all mines to have at least two means of access, a law which is still in being.
May these and other victims of mining accidents never be forgotten.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Not wishing to appear like shameless self promotion either for myself of my employer but you may be interested in the piece we contributed to for the BBC which shows some of the relics relating to the disaster.

We had few minutes pause at 10:30, even after 150 years the tragedy still resonates, may they all rest in peace...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
