looks like my outbox isn't sending. There are three messages in there and one of them is about 2 weeks old?

Because the person you sent the message to hasn't read it 😞 As soon as they open it to read it then the message moves to your sent items.

oh ok, presumably they see a message pending and open it or not as they see fit?

Well they get an email transcript, so if they don't want to reply then probably simply don't open it on the site to reply.
