I've been tracking the various post on these gadgets and listening to the numerous reports, so bull by the horns I bought one. For a tenner, if I should accidentaly drop it down a stope or get it minced by a rock landing on it, they are cheap enough not to shed any tears about. The build quality and performance vs price, is superb and IMHO cannot be matched. I'm off to get another tomorrow.
p.s. the tee shirts are looking good!!!!

I thought I would try out my new Tesco light in the Nangiles Manway. I was only in there about 15 minutes as time was a bit tight (and brownie points running low) so I couldn’t spend as long as I would have liked refining any sort of technique. Nonetheless, this is what came out. The camera by the way is a Vivitar digital compact, model 7340, 7 Mega pixels costing £49 from Asda which I bought primarily to copy some documents, and I’ve been more and more impressed with what it can do. So for £60 you can get into underground photography, albeit very basic, but still extremely effective!
EDIT: Battery size is critical. Most AA's mike up at about 14mm. I have some PROFiTEXX 3.2 Ah Nimh which mike up at 14.76 and will not fit. Peeling off the plastic skin will make it fit but with it being a metal bodied torch would effectively bypass the switch leaving it permanently on. Worth checking before getting one jammed in!

Very impressive, proving that as such products become more widely available at High Street prices you don't have to spend a fortune.

Certainly some great pics there Roy! What exposure times were you using?
Roy Morton

The exposures on these photos were pre determined settings on the camera. ie. the first two were with the camera set to 'Night Landscape' where the shutter stays open for 10 seconds, probably at full aperture (f 2.8 ) The flash in this setting is disabled leaving you to go yampy with the cree, painting the place with light. Be carefull as it's easy to over do the foreground. I tried a few practice shots in the back garden after dark, which helped a little...... but now my neighbours are convinced I'm a nutter!
The last two shots were with the camera set to 'Night Portrait' and in this mode the camera opens for 4 seconds and fires a series of three flashes of varying intensity. All I used the cree for here was to give long distance fill in. Using the flash will make the camera eat batteries, so keep some rechargeables in your kit bag (takes 2AA's) Aim the cree before you fire the camera off for best results. this last method worked well in this adit, the former method would be best suited to a larger space which I can't wait to try

With a 4 Gig memory card, it will take 1800 shots with the camera set to the highest resolution, quality etc. Will take SDHC and ordinary SD cards, up to a max of 8 Gig. £11 off flea bay for a 4 Gig.
This is what the camera looks like and again, for the price, you wouldn’t be too gutted if you dropped it down a dark hole or backed the car over it. 😮

Well, if it lights up and it doesn't let you down when it's needed then it sounds OK to me

And I say that as somebody who sells hand torches that cost between £40 and £400 😮 for sure there's going to be differences, as there is with a £10,000 car and a £40,000 car, but it still gets you from a to b... as indeed will a £400 car

Anyone else tried the Tesco headlight? I have one that i bought with the intention of breaking it and throwing it away.
How wrong i was. It kicks out a reasonable light, has been submerged, and soaking wet for 6 hours, and still works like brand new. It will never replace Nova's or stens but for 8 quid its a useful back up.

On the shelf right next to the torches, or do you mean the torches themselves? if so, in my 3 local Tesco's they are near the cycling accesories

Have you tried scrapping a car recently Gwyn? With all the H&S (all fluids drained and safely disposed of etc.) plus the bureaucracy you'll be lucky not to have to pay 'em to take a scrap car away. That's why a lot end up in quarries or unfenced shafts. :curse:

Yes!
Clapped out Astra diesel.
Legal, decent and above board!
£155, minus £10 as they dealt with the tyres!
There's a gold mine in those old tips and quarries!
Try Lockes, Port Penrhyn or Phoenix, Gaerwen.
Price on scrap dropped last week, but still worth it by far;
"Chinese cutting back" was the excuse, but the clever money is playing the futures.

I've also had the problem of batteries not fitting, it was energizer Nimh with me. Might pay to check the fit before venturing into the dark, as I will be next time! But for the money I can't fault it.

SWMBO just bought me one from the local store. Must admit first impressions gained from light painting the garage are very favorable for the price.

All my non underground mates take the mickey out of me for my collection of torches (Oldham, Petzl Duo+Myo XP, Dragon lamp, Maglite LED AA and D cell, Tesco Cree and other odds and ends) When i got the Tesco jobby out, all i heard was "not another torch, jesus how many do you need!!". I turned the thing on and several jaws dropped. So much so that Tescos in Gloucestershire should have done some good business in the torch department by now. Although i paid £8 for mine and local Tescos now has them at £14.
