When Gwynfynydd was still working the owners/lease holders held the sole rights to panning in the immediate vicinity.

No they did not. They just told people that.
They just had control of the access on their land.

If a trip does look likely, here's another one for the list (probably 2, as Mrs rnw likes finding gold too !)

It must be remembered that most of these places be it a mine or farmland belong to someone and the owner would probably be annoyed if he found someone digging on his land. It is only polite to ask the landowner for permission and access before you start. If the answer is no then please respect it.

Most people pan in the Coed y Brennin Forest on the Mawddach and the Wen. The Comission land ends at the tarmac road where it changes to unsurfaced. It is private from here up towards Gwynfynnydd on the left bank looking upriver. The other side is on Commission land.

All those nuggets came from the right bank, commission side, just up by the big pool below the mill. Best one was where the two rivers meet - jammed in a crack in a pool.. There was, interestingly, a lot less in the river bed last time I was there - I have a feeling someone has had a big dredge in the river and gone over it very thoroughly sometime in the last 15 years (I left england to go to ozzie in 1982 - returning in 2000) I did hear one was used up there.. I used to get a lot of mercury amalgam - and was pressed to find a skerrick of it despite a long day shifting big boulders.. Funny - I never found a lot in the river at BontDhu - although Jack gave me a magnificent specimen of gold in quartz which came from the vein where it crosses the river just by the mine entrance at Clogau - must have well over an ounce in it...

I panned the Wen many years ago. About that time there was a chap living in a van parked by the river who was (barely) making a living panning for gold (Welsh gold attracts a premium, just because it is Welsh). I have not been back for years (too far) and I read somewhere that floods have swept the rivers clean (don't know if this is true, or just a ruse to keep the competition at bay).

This site is interesting and worth a visit:

and I was gobsmacked by this recent thread on mindat:

At least panning in a river will not upset those who object to collecting down mines. You'll just get the anglers moaning at you instead!

I'd be happy to organise a day or weekend up there - tis a lot of fun. If anyone is interested, feel free to PM me, or perhaps Simon might like to set it up as a possible trip. There's several areas which are prospective, some of which I can't spell or pronounce (with apologies to the Welsh), but we always find gold. There are also a LOT of old workings around there which the explorers would enjoy whilst the wife and kids get wet and rich...
