I have just received this from the Mining History List in form of an email, as it mentions this website I have opened this topic. I personally know nothing of this and if "aditnow" wishes to reply on the Mining History List, I as a memebr will be happy to act on aditnows behalf. >

There is a guy using eBay to advertise miners lamps But not sell them on eBay.
The lamps can be seen aditnow.co.uk all the lamps Are fake he is trying to convince the Public they are genuine This guy will be at Pleaseley this weekend, the origin Of the lamps is India they are well doctored .
His trick is to exchange his fake lamp for your real lamp HE will also tell you he knows someone that will test brass
For age, his initials are ***

This is a bit premature as we most certainly do NOT have all of the facts.
My attitude in this is that I try to be impartial as I always do in similar matters; however I am concerned about the good name of aditnow and look forward to receiving instruction from admin.

What's been said about AN Roy? Is there a suggestion the site is in some way promoting the sale of fakes? 😮

Simon, good.
My impression from the posting is that there is an implication, which as far as I can see is untrue anyway, that these lamps are being offered on aditnow. Others may read the posting differently.
However, if I see an implication, so may others.
If you would like to issue a statement, I will gladly post it on your behalf on the Mining History List. I personally view the integrity of aditnow and its administrators as beyond reproach, and would like to add this to my posting on the MHL

Not in so many words. The the key sentence is obviously "The lamps can be seen aditnow.co.uk". Just depends how each individual chooses to interpret it. Some no doubt may reach that conclusion. The original poster hasn't helped by not giving the sentence any context by, say, adding, in a discussion on fake lamps in the forum.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

As far as I can see, 8 lamps have been pictured on this site, with 4 declared as 'newbuild' and 2 more 'suspect'.

I'm not quite sure what the implication might be, but having read that thread I certinly wouldn't buy a miners lamp in future!

The thread has raised the profile of fakes quite considerably and I suspect many people may now be aware that there are a lot of fakes around and that they need expert advice.

Thus, far from providing any sort of provenance for such things, I suspect it's made people a lot more wary.

Just posted to list by Bernard Moore >

To my knowledge aditnow is a creditable Org., and I would be surprised to hear that such was being promoted by same. Please elaborate as I am not quite sure exactly what you are saying. I am sure we all appreciate you good intentions, but clarification would be useful to some I am sure.

See, its not just me that thinks that the posting may implicate aditnow

Thanks Roy, PM sent. Vanoord, if you get a chance perhaps you could do some more thread tidying and make it clear that any discussion in those threads around fakes is a discussion of fakes and not the site selling fakes (!).

My own feeling is it's better that people know the fakes are out there than delete the thread.

I've been so busy this week I've not really followed the discussion I'm afraid, but certainly don't want people thinking either the site is selling fakes or allowing anybody else to promote theirs.

Actually, I think that despite the efforts of certain new posters to establish legitimacy of some very dubious items the inverse has happened.
Reading the threads highlights these fakes and the sellers for what they really are.
Whilst interested parties have tried to use posts here to create a provenance for fakes (good fakes, but still fakes) the users of AN are a fairly knowldgable bunch and the truth is being exposed.

The Mining History List should be appraised of the situation and the issues raised but AditNow had nothing to be embarrased about. Infact AN has performed a massive service by helping "out" these fakes and shysters in a reasoned discusion.
Clarity with the Mining History List would be beneficial as there is an outside possiblity of mis-interpretting AditNows position on the matter (unless anyone actually eads the threads then all becomes clear)

The sooner we kick the fake mongers into touch the better

The only posting of lamp pics I recall seeing was the one mentioned, which claimed that most of the lamps shown were faked or suspect. I don't know enough about lamps to comment one way or the other on that, but would add that I'd be interested to see what the poster to the mining history list comes back with to elaborate on their claims of the use of AN to further the selling of fakes.

One more point on the brass aging bit - you cannot tell the age of brass by any means. You can estalish the composition of the brass, either by chemical or X-ray analysis, and you can determine the nature of any patination which will give indicators as to whether it has formed over a long time or whether it has been artificially induced (unless it's been polished, in which case you won't be able to tell much other than someone's been at it with the brasso!)

[mod]This subject has taken another twist!

Firstly, lest anyone be in any doubt: AditNow exists as a forum on which there is no bar to registration and as a result there is no filtering of new users. Thus, opinions expressed are not those of AN unless they are expressed by an Administrator.

Where it is believed that users may be misrepresenting facts; attempting to use the site to provide legitimacy for their actions or trading; acting against the ethos of the site; or behaving in a manner intended to aggravate other users, then sanctions will be taken to whatever extent is considered necessary.

For the record: AditNow is neither offering for sale, or offering any guide as to the authenticity of any lamps or mining checks. We do not have the expertise to do so and would thus advise that anyone considering buying such an artifact takes expert advice.

Whilst the site does not have a 'policy' towards mining artifacts, it should be noted that a large proportion of the membership does not believe that such objects should be retained in private collections and that if they are to be removed from their original location that they remain publicly accessible.

In conclusion, therefore, any posts on this forum should be treated only as the words of the person who posted them; and no weight or authenticity should be attached to them because of where they have been posted. Consider them, if you will, as you would consider words written in sand on a beach.[/mod]

[mod]This thread has been locked pending further research.

I'd be grateful if the subject were not discussed in open forums until further notice.

I have edited some posts to remove references to 'off forum names' and to certain quoted allegations which would otherwise not be allowed if posted directly to the forum.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.[/mod]
