Quote:

An MP is calling for workers who made sure British soldiers had bullets and bombs in World War II are honoured.

The Conservative MP for Clwyd West, David Jones, has tabled a Commons motion on the issue. It follows decisions to mark the war effort of groups like conscripted miners - the "Bevin Boys".

"It is surprising that the contributions of so many conscript workers have never been recognised," remarked the MP.

During the war, around 1.5m women were employed in engineering and munitions sites across the UK - the majority of them conscripted into service.

"This was the first time women had been conscripted," added Mr Jones.

"The work was unpleasant. The hours were long, and the factories were targeted by German bombers. The work was, however, crucial to victory."

One woman who remembers the effort well is Mary Louvain Jones. Now 91, she spent WWII making bullets at Ruthin Goal in Denbighshire.

It was one of many sites in north Wales helping fuel the fight overseas, with secret factories at Rhydymwyn and at Marchwiel in Wrexham.

I've heard and read quite a lot about the underground works at Rhydymwyn but not Marchwiel?

My grandma and her sister did this sort of work up here in Cheadle Hulme. Heard some good stories about playing with magnesium, they used to turn this on the lathes, but the chippings they used to throw into a fire, for a laugh.
The management thanks you for your co operation.
