Arrived today, a very good read, thanks Mike.

Quote:

From the Gertruda Adit, a set of steps leads to a short side gallery on a higher level called Death Gallery. Miners suspected of gold theft where sentenced to die here. They were forced to put their hands into two apertures cut in the wall. The apertures with the hands inside were filled with mortar. The convist would die slowly in terrible torment.

Eek - makes the often-quoted Derbyshire punishment for a third offence of ore stealing (pinning of right hand to stows with a knife) seem positively lenient!

Interesting that arsenic production was in full swing by 1709. In Cornwall lit was a hundred years later. i often wonder about whether we led the field..........In fact, no I won't go there.

The Germans effectively taught us about hard rock mining and therefore the same with the techniques. Zloty Stok is in Southern Poland (Silesia - excuse spelling) which was German in its time.
