i have just bought a platt brothers pit check as my grandfather (sadly no longer with us) worked for them at moston colliery manchester, the person i bought it off is wondering why there is a letter stamped on the ones he has, there are various letters a,f.m.c,mine is c.
id like to think it denoted either the coal seam worked by the employee or perhaps the colliery, unfortunatly there is no colliery name on the check so either its very old or it was somthing to do with surface operations.
could anyone give me any help working out what this letter denotes as ive failed to find any records from platts collieries from before nationalisation.
