Obviously many people here are keen and knowlegeable photographers. I don't know if anyone tuned into the Antiques Roadshow tonight but there was a bloke on their with part of his Nikon collection. All I can say is I was gobsmacked. It was incredible and worth a fortune.

Apparently the Nikon F series was the camera of choice during the Vietnam War with the professionals. When things got a bit hairy they used to seal the cameras in plastic bags, dump them in a river, and retrieve them later.

At the risk of sounding stupid, not unusual for me, can you not use a waterproof case? Of course this wouldn't help if the water was 50 foot deep. 🙂

i keep mine pretty well wraped up so not much water gets to them    its the getting knocked around and dirt in them that killed mine

The Pelicases that a lot of people use are very good, mine developed a small leak, but to their credit they offer a lifetime warranty and I had a replacement within 2 days

Not that time ;)

Mind you, it wasn't my camera inside, it was Vanoord's. He'd lent it to me which given I'd drowned my last two was probably not a good idea ;)

It's one thing worrying that you're going to ruin another camera of your own, but quite another worrying that you're going to ruin a friend's. Fortunately it didn't get damaged, only a tiny amount of water leaked into the box.

I don't tend to take mine into extremely dogey places, and I always keep it in a sealed yellow box used for underwater photography. So as yet I haven't had any problems, though I did drop a finepix at Thrang Crag Quarry, which messed up the lens retraction a bit.. 😞

SimonRL has a new 8400; Colonel Mustard uses one for his fine photography; and over on DarkPlaces, Darkstar has produced some fabulous pics with one, including (I think) the calcium deposits that are in the calendar.

Incidentally, anyone who hasn't got a calendar, be warned there are virtually none left, so hurry hurry hurry!

What DSLR are you using Ben?

Olympus E410 just got it a couple of days ago after the kodak digital i had been using died todays trouble i think is down to the compact flash card because when i was up nenthead yesturday i used an xd memory card which worked fine. most of the photos which i uploaded yesturday where taken with a fujifilm finepix s5600 which works well on the surface but does not like underground

Ben It could be the damp affecting your memory card, its happened to me ,I popped it on a towel on top of a radiator for
a few hours and its worked fine ever since. When i saw you at nenthead yesterday, one of my batterys went into meltdown, took me hours to repair damage to camera

Ive had my camera two years now,its been drenched a few times and dried out its a fuji S9500 it takes good pics underground,I think yesterdays incident was the battery rather than the cameras , hopefully.
