Like the title says, really. What is the correct pronunciation?
I say (phonetically) ad-it as in had-it.
Although I have heard others say it (phonetically) 'audit'
Which is right?

I've heard...

ad-it
a-dit
audit

I prefer ad-it as in adit-now as in had it now 😉

Adit, as in add-it.
Every other way is wrong

Cool. I shall correct people safely in the knowledge that I am right. And if they still argue the point, I shall point them at Jagman.

I've only heard it pronounced as ad-it as in Had It, or you've had it now. Are these other versions local to any areas?

I have noticed some people on various forums spell it audit (and presumably pronounce it as audit) maybe that's where that pronunciation comes from.

In the same way as I have seen several times "loco" spelt "logo".

The dictionary seems to suggest ad.it (add-it) and I'd go with that.

In my experience, the word 'adit' is sometimes bellowed as "Aaaaaah-dit" while pointing 😉

When I used to live in Surrey, I knew two people who lived in the area who had lived in that area all/most of their lives. They both pronounced Epsom as "Epson" so mistakes can be deeprooted!

I spent most of my life growing up in calne. And i recently had a discussion with Nimrod and wenders. (wenders being ex-local to me) where wenders pronounced it properly cowln and nimrod pronounced it carl-knee (phonetically). But people who dont live there tend to pronounce it carln.
Now how about bicester, alnwick or worcester?

Actually, I wrote that.
It was the name of a small village just up the road from where I used to live at weekends (kidwelly). I loved the sound of it when pronounced properly.
