Does anyone know when this was done. I was there about 3 to 4 years ago and did not notice it. At the time I was not equiped to go underground ie no lighting, so maybe just too dark to see it! What is so terrible in there to require stopping poeple getting in (or something getting out!) ie. has enyone been in?

I've found a post about this very thing after uploading mine.
Just ignore me unless you have any further info.

Hi Seamore.
Its still unclear to us why this wall was built. For quite some time the wall has been there, but its only been in the last few years that the small space beneath the piece of timber in the wall has been filled in.
The level does lead to a drop though not an excessive one, though in theory I suppose someone could fall down it. It seems a bit strange though, since there are plenty of other open slate mins shafts around cumbria in more obvious places.

Might not be excessive, but I certainly wouldn't have wanted to fall down it!
As mentioned in a prevoius post, I went down the shaft in 1992 - it's about 30 - 40ft deep to a small closehead & blocked level heading outbye.

arr yes, I think I saw the blocked level in the lower reaches of the quarry. The level itself may be blocked but, when I went it was possible to squeze into it after about 20mins of rubble clearance (no tools involved).
I didnt actually get inside mind, I didnt want to risk it due to a slab longing to fall above the sqeeze; but I might have a further look next time. I was speaking to Alastair Cameron about it, and apparently theres some axles in the lower level, propped against the side of the tunnel.
