New book, I have received notification of this book which is due out in a couple of weeks I'm offering it post free for advance orders - Author John Barnatt, SB, 172pp, 8 x 11 Inchs, - £30.00 www.moorebooks.co.uk

Produced by Historic England and their synopsis follows
Every county in England has a network of mine and quarry workings, a little-seen underground world that is full of mystery and complexity. Some include engine chambers, arched levels, deep shafts, underground canals, drainage soughs, and discarded equipment.
This book presents a detailed introduction to the underground mining and quarrying heritage in England. It reviews the many types of mineral and stone taken from the ground over several millennia and examines the wide range of archaeological remains that survive today. Featuring detailed photographs, maps, tables, and diagrams, as well as an extensive glossary of mining terms, this book sheds new light on the many and varied wonders to be found underground.

The book arrived today and it is superb full of colour photographs mainly by Paul Deakin, but additional ones from several others including Ian Castledine, John Barnatt carefully details the many types of Mines and Underground Quarries whether stone or metal, . He looks at the various artefacts , structures and features in these places to detail archaeological interpretation . A lot of the areas are still accessible and are supported by superb photography. This book I suggest may lead to many more visitors to these magical realms. It would be nice to think similar books may be produced for other corners of the UK

I can't emphasise enough what a cracker this is

Seems only fair felt very frustrated when I saw the Descent and wanted to make it up to loyal customers. The new book which is due soon seems the fairest way.

I think I recall a topic on this subject before, Cambridgeshire I think is almost devoid of underground workings, I am aware of one accessible site with short tunnels in chalk and I believe coprolites may have been dug from shafts, around Barrington but as far as i can tell no trace remains.
