During these rather dull T4 days, would there be any interest here in arranging a program of Online Talks about Mine history, exploration and preservation?

Zoom is a good tool for running such talks and taking part is free and easy. I am sure that between us we must have the knowledge and photos to run a good number of such talks.

I could do one on The Company of Mines Royal, or The History of Coniston Coppermines, or The Wad Mine. Conscious these are all rather Cumbria centric, so may not appeal to a wider audience ?

Any takers, contributors or ideas ? :smartass:

I have Zoom, and would be very interested in the history of CAT explorations, warts and all!
Plus any other stuff.
So I am in for a start.

I'd be happy to contribute something, perhaps on foreign mines.

I'd also be happy to host the talk as I have a licence which allows unlimited time and a larger number of participants.

PM me and I'll start the process if you want.

Yes, I'm interested in that. It's going to be a grim few months.

Within the Wealden we have been doing this now and again. The last one we invited KURG members to join, and so if other groups are doing this, with their society Zoom accounts (or whatever platform they use), inviting AditNow members along as well might be an additional way to spread the love.

I assume most of us know of the SubBrit webinars as well.

I am up for zoom meetings / talks.
We have been having them at the local model club and they have been well received by the members.
Its helped to keep the club members:thumbsup: in touch during these troubled times.

Ok, so how do we do this. Should we schedule the first “event” on here and see if anyone signs up ? Who knows, it might catch on.

I can do “An Illustrated History of Coniston Coppermines” to get the ball rolling. Or “The impact of the German Miners at Keswick in the 16thC”

I'd be interested
Don't have much to contribute but if interest generates enthusiasm and if that in turn helps folk keep connected and keep their minds off the outside world then I'm all for that

Whoever hosts each session will need access to an appropriate Zoom account, not a free one - even a basic one limits you to 100 guests, but 100 would almost certainly be OK - if we got 100 to a NAMHO conference lecture we would all be gobsmacked.

Right we're on...

Next Thursday, 7th January on the Zoom Platform at 20.00h, Mark Hatton will give an illustrated talk on the History of the Coniston Copper Mines.

The login and password will be released closer to the time.

I have seen Mark's talk before - if you haven't I highly recommend it.

Is there a way to pin this to the top or advertise it in some way?

You or Mark could add it as an upcoming event.

I assume this feature still works although it hasn't been used for a couple of years.

Done. As said, adding as an event might help promote it 🙂.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
